The negative environmental impacts of trying to recycle EV batteries

Maybe we should bury them in a hole like wind turbines.

Currently, the only EV battery material worth recycling is cobalt. That leaves lithium, manganese, and nickel, among a host of other materials that may not be economically recyclable or require additional processing that drives cost. That’s not only bad for the environment since there is a ton of leftover material, it’s also bad for recyclers because unless there’s a buyer lined up for lithium and manganese, they could be out of luck.
The two main methods for recycling batteries involve either extreme temperatures or acid. Both processes generate emissions and create waste, which can end up in the environment. Then there’s the matter of economics, as many battery companies look to use less cobalt.

Beyond the fact that it’s labor-intensive and sometimes dangerous to recycle the materials inside a battery, as explained by Science.org, the costs involved with transporting the batteries from one place to another are considerable expenses.

Batteries are just a placeholder until we get this worked out

Ship them to India. I've watched videos of barefoot guys gutting batteries to make new ones.

Those 5 year replacement costs need to be factored into your budget.

Nope.

Perhaps the cost of recycling the batteries should be added into the cost of the EV ?

"Clean fusion energy - just 10 years away."
I heard this in the '60s as a kid. I'm still hearing it today.
We can't (or more precisely won't) deal with the miniscule waste stream generated by the nuclear power industry. What are we going to do with the toxic waste from lithium batteries, the cadmium, selenium and other heavy metals in solar panels, and the (mostly) inert but voluminous waste stream from wind turbine blades?
If only we had a government department in charge of energy policy in this country, who could look beyond 4 year election cycles and develop a long term, cohesive policy for our energy needs and all of its side effects.
If only.

We get it. You work in oil and gas. EV's will never make it.

I love how these people talk about "the environment" like it's some magical, pure, faraway place. It's already "in the environment", retard

I watched those dudes melt down brake drums and pour new ones. Just pouring 50 lbs of molten steel in flip flops.

This is the altered reality that these loons live in.

Like Solar panels!! Hmm
After producing power for 25++ years, I think its safe to say its worth scrapping it.

No, no.. It's BEYOND the environment.

It will always be 10 years away. We are finally closer with AI controlling the plasma though. That has been the kicker and there has finally been some jumps with software figuring some stuff out for us.
Still earliest is probably 2035 in whatever France is doing and then fine tune, mass produce and fight off politics of existing energy companies - we are looking at 2050 bare minimum.
We kind of need some wealthy individual to embrace Fusion advancement, similar to Elon and Mars.

I will be dead before dealing with used EV batteries is an issue.

Agree, but the Gates and Bezos of the world seem to be more interested in wagging their fingers at us.
If climate change is the crisis some say it is, you would think the Department of Energy would be leading a Manhattan Project like effort to bring fusion power to fruition, with the budget to match.
