The most common tree in East Baton Rouge? One type stands out among 63,000 counted so far

For most of the past decade, crews from Baton Rouge Green have canvassed city streets and parish roads and, one-by-one, counted trees. It turns out the common crape myrtle is pretty common after all.

While the nonprofit group was formed 35 years ago to be a steward of the city-parish's trees, it was just eight years ago that it started an inventory program to simply count and identify trees in public spaces.

As of last week, they had counted 63,000, and fully a third of them are listed in an online database as "common crapemyrtle" — 2,543 large, 2,873 small and 17,028 medium.

"By the end of the year, over 70,000 trees will have been inventoried a single time," said Christopher Cooper, program manager with Baton Rouge Green. "We inventory 10,000 additional trees every year."

I didn't know anyone did this kind of work. And I'm still not sure why they do it.

But I like that it's funded largely by private donations, and they plant and maintain trees on public land.

It's these kinds of threads that give OT'ers such a huge advantage in trivial pursuit.

Govt bean counters exist to count govt beans. Why? To work. To put someone with very few marketable skills to work doing a menial job that takes nothing but time.

Bureaucracy at its finest

It’s like a magnolia. It’s good if it’s at the back of your yard away from your porch and driveway. Enjoy it from a distance.

Did your simple arse miss the part where this is a non profit largely funded from private donations? The groups 990 is pretty clean to. There’s no one on staff making 6 figures and they run a lean budget. It seems pointless but imagine how much shittier Baton Rouge could be if absolutely no one gave a shite how it looked.

Who hates crepe myrtles? Hate a tree that deserves it like a bradford pear or a tallow tree.

Also, crepe murder is wrong.

Many cities have Tree Inventories which helps ID diseases earlier, manage these diseases and to know where trees are needed on public land. The inventory also helps enforce Tree Protection Ordinances.

Sure did. Are you the bean counter, Alex?

Oh…. And bean counter positions exist for the very reason I said they do. To give simpletons a job that simply takes time. I’m sorry for my transgressions. Maybe at the next years gala on the rooftop you can come over to my table and tell me how many more trees you counted this year.

One bean. Two bean. Three beans an Alex.
