I realize this is a part of life, but I was closer to her than my other grandparents. I suppose part of that reason is that she outlived the others.

She was 98 years old, and relatively healthy up until this past year. She had lost her site in her late 80’s, though. She insisted on living alone as long as she could, and only compromised to appease us all by living in a garage apartment behind my sister’s house once she reached the age of 92. Her 6 great- grandkids would frequently visit, reminding her to walk with her cane to help her balance. My grandma’s response was to drag it behind her in public in the pettiest of manners, as a subtle FU to anybody thinking she needed help.

She served in the Women’s Air Corps during WW2 and was stationed at Love Field in Dallas. In her later years she decided she wanted to move to the hill country and run her own ranch and RV park. Despite having zero experience in this area, she succeeded.

The world lost a great lady.

Lost my last one at 98 as well about 5 years ago. He was like a 2nd dad to me. My other 3 had been dead for quite some time.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. My grandma, who was like a second mom to me, died at 78. I’d give just about anything to have made 20 more years of memories with her. Condolences to you and your family.

Don't worry. Memaw is up in heaving whipping up a cake for her man that's about to come home from a hard day's work. It's Friday. The gone hug and kiss and he'll be up in the morning casting a line. Memaw will be with her circle of friend quilting or playing bridge. They good mane. It sucks but they good.

Really, the best we can all hope for is being 98 years old and relatively healthy. That's a great run, and ending it with
quote:

The world lost a great lady.
is the cherry on top.

I know it doesn't fill the void she left, but that's the goal. She accomplished it and was able to leave great memories to you and the rest of her family. Continue to honor her by telling the stories of that great life like you did with this post. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sounds like an awesome person with good character. Sorry for your loss.

Mine was 97 when she passed in 2019. Her last words were "like hell I don't" when my aunt told her she didn't need to wear a watch in her hospital bed. She passed away about 2 hours later.

My condolences. Sounds like she was a great woman. Reminds me of my own grandmother. Women of that generation were built different.

It’s very sad when your last grandparent dies. You lose not just a family member but all the stories and history they had from over the years.

The only good thing about your last grandparent dying is you’ll never have to go through a grandparent dying again. It hit me hard all four times it happened.

I am sorry for your loss, but this:
quote:

a subtle FU to anybody thinking she needed help.

made me laugh. Those old folks were tough as nails, and endured hard times that would make most of us wilt like yesterday's lettuce.

Godspeed to your grandma. Your memories of her will help see you through.

Sorry for your loss! Attended my Aunt’s funeral this week. My parents and grandparents are gone and I have 1 Aunt and 1 Uncle left counting both sides of my family. I’m so sad to see this generation go. Your Grandmother was one of a generation that can never be replaced.
