The Epitome of Fed Gov Inefficiency/Incompetence ?

Dear Facebook,
I’m sorry OT, I don’t have Facebook and I’ve just got to rant somewhere. I’ve had my share of experiences with inefficient/incompetent government: the DMV, the IRS, the woman who denied our marriage license 4 times until we brought our lawyer with us (pretty sure she was just pocketing the application fee), but I think today I experienced the holy grail of just how terrible anything you touch is: attempting to renew my passport.
Current turnaround for renewing a passport? 18 fricking weeks….1/3 of an entire year to renew a document. Literally the only thing that is changing is my picture. My paperwork, payment, etc. was delivered 4/26; my passport renewal was updated to “In process” 6/18….that’s right, NINE WEEKS to do the following (basically deposit a check and open an envelope): “It may take up to 6 weeks from the day you submit your application until your status is “In Process.” During these 6 weeks, your application is delivered to a mail facility, your payment is processed, and your application is entered into our system.“
Since the renewal process is already 3 weeks behind schedule, and they haven’t actually done anything yet, there’s a very real chance I won’t have my passport in time for our trip. So now I’m calling their toll free number to see if I can pay their extortion fee to “expedite” my renewal. I’m not exaggerating here, it took me 15 calls TO GET ON HOLD. That’s right, the menu sent me straight to a busy signal the first 14 times. Current wait time is “over” 2.5 hours. Holy shite.
The real kicker? If I actually need my passport (and pay enough money) turnaround is 1-3 days in person. I’m just speechless.
Thanks for listening. 1 hour 45 minutes to go until, what I’m sure is, a highly qualified and helpful federal employee answers the phone and tells me to frick off and i can cancel my trip. I’m sure this is just an anomaly though, and something important, like healthcare, the government could handle much better.
So does the OT have any similar type experiences with our benevolent, all powerful government?

Call one of your Senator's. Kennedy was especially helpful for my wife.

CONTACT THE OFFICE OF YOUR CONGRESSMAN.
Recently, we needed passports for a child and a few other relatives and got them within a few days.
You will still go to the post office (or whatever) to fill out the application. That's no problem. The issue is that the passport people take forever to process it. A congressman's staff can get the passport people to process it almost immediately and send it to you express.

There were literally no appointments available in the entire United States when we needed a passport.
You're wasting your time.
CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN.

Government inefficiency/incompetence is not limited to the federal level.

i had a similar experience. myself, my wife (no pics), and my two children all applied for passports at the post office the same day. My wife and I were renewals and my kids were new applications. We planned accordingly to allow enough time per their time frames. I received mine with a few weeks. My wife received hers in a month or so. Both kids took months. We ended up cancelling our trip due to the covid test requirements but we received the kids within days of leaving for our trip if we would have gone.
i tried calling and received no help. i did call my local congressman and they were very friendly but in the end were no help.
sorry man I'm no help but know the government is useless.

Was he darn near as helpful as a backscratcher in a burn ward?

Waiting 11 months for the ATF to cash a $200 check and process your paperwork so you can buy a Class 3 item.
