The wife used to get sad when a life milestone would happen for our first born and she wasn’t present. Second, not as much. Third, were not sure where he is half the time.
*but I did teach the two oldest how to ride bikes with two wheels. As I will the third. Personally. Like a man.

Giant clam alert.
You should be thanking this man for doing your job.
Do you believe you will be sitting on your death bed thinking of who taught your kid to ride bikes?
PS - Do you have fond memories of your dad teaching you to ride a bike or something?
Much ado about nothing.

I'm actually kind of upset right now but the wife thinks I'm being ridiculous. That's something that I will NEVER be able to do now. My father in-law effectively took that experience away from me as a dad.
Jesus Christ, dude. Get over it. It's not like he got your son a hooker.

A lot like teaching a kid to drive.
I learned to drive around 8 on the old Farmall tractor (first without the manure spreader in tow, then with said spreader in tow). Lots of open space to not worry about running into anything or keeping inside the confines of say a sidewalk. Same with a bike I suppose, makes sense.
Do they still make no speed bikes with the backpedal brakes as the starter bike or do they just have gears and hand brakes now?

Here ya go
But seriously, if you’re working your arse off to provide, then try to find a way to plan/spend more time with your son. Be happy for him and his grandpa. Don’t ignore it, you can still take part and let your son know you are proud of him.

Is this the same in laws that gave you a plot of land so you can build in their backyard?

Pour yourself a bourbon, and buy your son a dirt bike tomorrow.

Given the situation you're describing, you're gonna miss some firsts. It sucks but it is what it is. Grandpa and your son have a great memory together and you're getting free child care (I assume). I'd let it go. You'll have plenty of firsts with your son.
glass half full.
OP can also take heed at least that there are lessons he can.master which his op demonstrates for me and others to see.
I'm familiar with models neither embraced nor understood by the suffering masses.

Ok. First feel the feeling.
Breathe, deep and full.
Sorrow?
Anger?
Both.
The premises upon which sorrow and anger are based are challenged in Buddhism.
The whole idea of how reality works is probably different than you have been led to believe.
Back to your conditional reality: you might feel a sense of competition with your father. He may even be an Asswipe about it. In any case you need to forgive him. Go ahead and feel the sorrow and anger on your own time. I don't know your relationship but forgive him aloud in the shower.

I've been looking forward to teaching him this spring so that we both could have that memory.
Stop putting shite off bro. You have to make time for you family. Need to set rules for yourself regarding work. I.e. not working on sundays or something. Time will pass you by (and somebody will step in) if you used the full time job excuse.

I think you're just putting too much stock into the act of teaching your son how to ride a bike. One day I was outside by myself and just jumped on my sisters bike and taught myself. Wasnt a big deal.

I’m sure you taught his daughter a few things. At least he wasn’t naked with your child during the teaching moments. Call it even.

Somebody should ban teaching little dudes to ride on a boys bike - that bar is brutal and their legs aren't long enough to prevent the nut shots.

As a grandfather, two of my grandchildren learned to ride em at my house. Everyone says I taught them, I did not " teach" them anything. They asked me to remove the training wheels and I did, I also put the seat all the way down so they're feet were flat on the ground. They pushed the bike with they're feet a few times up and down the driveway, then after 10 mins , wa-la they peddled it a few times , almost fell , few more times they were doing it. All this time I sat in a chair offering support, that's it the end.
Relax bra, paw paw didn't "teach"them , they were just at his house when it happened.
