I just found out that a girl I went to high school with died by suicide. Another guy that I went to elementary school with committed suicide a couple of years ago, and then a good friend that I knew for years also took his life several years back.

I’m only 33, but it feels like more and more people my age are either committing suicide or dying from drug overdoses. It’s such a tragedy to die young, and when I see the news, it hits home harder and harder each time.

I’m from Donaldsonville. I can count on two hands the number of people I graduated with who did NOT die of an overdose, suicide, or murder. One of my closest friends was unfortunately the suicide.

There’s a bunch of high school classmates of mine that either overdosed or committed suicide, not sure which one in some cases.

Lots of hopelessness/purposelessness out there

We're increasingly untethered as a culture, something we often celebrate (wrongly, in my view).

I know three OD's and three legit suicide, and one of the OD's might have also been intentional.

And those are people I actually knew well, not just a guy/gal I remember from school.

I went to an uppity public high school in Columbus GA that was made to put kids in college. The amount of people in my graduation class that have been killed, not just died of disease or suicide, has been insane to me. And I’m 30.

Sounds like you had a pretty bad influence on them when y’all were in school together.

In all honestly though, I think this will sadly be more and more common, especially with the way mental health issues have skyrocketed the last two and a half years or so.

Seeing this from college friends and I've heard of a few from HS. I don't think I know anyone who's intentionally turned the lights out.

Tough old world, baby. If you're not bolted together tightly, you're gonna shake, rattle, and roll before you turn thirty.

I recently turned 36 (from BR) and at least 10 of my close friends from High School-mid 20’s have died from opiate overdose/suicide in the last 8 years. It’s beyond tragic and most were all around great people.

Untethered society and focus on the material world. We act like the physical and tangible is all that matters, maybe even all there is in existence. But it's easy to see it doesn't bring anyone fulfillment, just temporary pleasure. We get used to and take for granted EVERYTHING physical. A society that only cares about tits and houses and money, with no intangible, cultural, spiritual beliefs? Doomed to misery

I consider myself lucky, small class of 184 - we graduated 20+ years and no deaths yet…

I’ve had 2 commit suicide by gsw. One in high school (freshman ‘06) and one in 2014.

A few more have overdosed whether it be purposely, or, not.

Death among friends is horrible, but, childhood friends sting a lot harder.

My best friend from late 90s-graduation moved states for college and royally fricked up his life due to drugs and bad decisions. Got depressed and ended up in prison for a few years. Glad to say he reached out (letters from prison) and we were able to reconnect and he got the help he needed. He’s completely turned his life around and although we’re not tight like we were, we talk a few times a year and catch up when we can. I’m glad he’s still around.

I had 4 kids in just my neighborhood alone that I grew up with -- one shot himself in the head, two OD'd, and a girl who tried to commit suicide but ended up blowing off half her face and survived.

So sad and sorry for all of your losses. Suicide is NEVER the answer, get help! Many love you, the pain can be healed….

People died in bunches around 30 and the second wave will be around 50. It is weird.

On Aug 13, 2021 my son who was a student at LSU committed suicide. I read this thread and just broke down because it’s still so fresh. If anyone on this thread is dealing with this or thoughts of it talk to someone. I never saw it coming. He was my only son. A huge part of me is just gone. I realize this is probably not the place to say all this but it breaks my heart to think of anyone going through this.
