fricking love mine, already making plans for another once this one is 200k+ miles.
Side note: recently had to replace the water pump (insane easy job done <15 minutes) and wheel hub but both jobs were stupid easy.

had one when SUV meant sport utility vehicle and not oversized luxury car. It was burnt orange and looked like I worked for the highway department and it maneuvered like a supertanker, but it hauled all my hunting shite around. I slept in the back of it on occasion. I put 140,000 miles on it before the timing chain broke and the mechanic told me it would cost more to fix than the blue book value.
80s suburbans were fricking tanks

Great vehicle for families with teens. We’ve had four suburbans. Fantastic travel vehicles.

I have had one since 2006. It has almost 200k in miles. I have put about $8,000 in it for struts, brakes and various repairs outside of tires and oil changes.
The paint has deteriorated and needs to be redone.
I have a hard time letting it go. We raised three kids in that truck and traveled across the country in it.
Best choice I ever made.
My parents had the same thing from maybe 1996 to 2014. By that time the AC was shot and it was the spare car used to haul dogs and messy stuff, and it smelled funny. We borrowed it all the time for road trips. Steamboat one year, a wedding in KC a few years later. My friends all remember it fondly.

Honestly, get one and you'll probably wonder why you didn't do it sooner. There's a reason you see so many Suburbans/Yukon XL's on the road. They fit lots of kids (and their friends) and all of the accompanying stuff.
Plus, they're more than awesome on road trips. With 3 kids, I can't imagine you would regret the purchase.
ETA: Be aware of transmission issues in some years. Was big mad for awhile, but I got over it (somewhat). Still a net positive on the ride.

Leased 4 suburbans over 16 years for company. Never had a mechanical issue. Keep in mind they got turned back after 4 years, but each was pushing 100k miles. Supremely comfortable out on the road. You can probably get by with a Tahoe if it’s mostly in town and short road trips. Suburban has more cargo room but rarely used other than long trips unless you have a lot of everyday gear.

Your only real options are Suburban/Yukon XL/Escalade or Expedition Max if you want any room behind the back seat. Personally, I'd prefer a NA V8 over a turbo V6.
I'm currently trying to sell a bulletproofed 2003 Excursion 4x4 diesel with relatively low miles. There's nothing else that will do what the Excursion does.

Yes. And Fords eat turbos.

Wife has a 2017. Plan on keeping it as long as we can.. only has 70,000 miles on it. I think they’re the best vehicles ever made.

We have a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali XL with the 6.2L. Bought it used with 12K miles. Saved a good bit on the purchase price. It’s a really nice vehicle.
The 2025 Suburbans look fantastic.

Had a suburban and replaced it with a Yukon XL. Tried and true engines. Replaced one tranny and several window motors and other stuff. Spent a fortune on gas. Four kids, long trips. Great cars but expensive.

The 5.7 and 6.4 hemi are notorious for eating lifters as well. The new ford 7.3 reportedly has lifter problems. New 6.7 cummins is having lifter problems. Wtf is up with all the new engines having lifter problems?

Not common, but certainly could be a problem. There are a few preventative measures that can help prevent this.
Change your oil when you reach 70%.
Replace the 0W20 with 5W30. High grade synthetic.
Purchase an AFM/DFM disabler.

You realize you're only going to get people that fellate Chevy/GMC in this thread, right? To go from Honda/Toyota to an American brand has a chance of not turning out really well. I'd take a hard look at independent reliability reports before making a decision. As new models of a vehicle brand get released, what tends to seem to happen is that the first year after a redesign, reliability is not good for American and European manufacturers. It usually gets better, when the manufacturer fixes stuff in the default transmission, etc.
Also, be very careful on test drives, which what trim levels and features you're comparing. My ex wife's Explorer Sport was nothing like driving an Explorer XLT, for instance.
You can get three rows in an Explorer for example, although the Expedition wasn't much more expensive than the Explorer. I drove five people to Florida from Texas and back for a week with all their garbage in an Explorer Sport quite easily. Two women and a girl were involved, and it worked out (to represent how much crap was packed, and still fit.) The Explorer seated 6, with the middle row captain's chairs, not the bench.
Chevy seems to have a mixed reliability reputation, from absolute disasters to the unicorns that have been touted in this thread, (300k, and only oil, tires and brakes!)
You can also get a pickup king cab, put on a lockable bed cover, and stick the three kids in the back seat. I mean, I could fit a 65" TV in the backseat of my truck standing up, it's not like it's small. In this age of inflation and vehicle costs, you want as many options as you can get.

Since the excursion left the market it was the only truck frame full size SUV available for quite a while . The suburban / Yukon XL were insanely practical. Great tow ratings and loads of interior space. They were great trucks.
Now the new ones are unibody

Wife have a surburban for 6 years loved it. Went to get her another one last year and compared to the ford expedition max it didn’t match up. The ford has more room, better navigation I can get with an XLT package and it was honestly cheaper.
We have had the expedition max for 2 years now and we still love it. I have 3
Boys under 10 and it’s been great so far.

Look at the Lexus GX 550.
The base model is just cheap looking

Any different than the threads fellating imports?
No, but that's different. Right?
*Have never had to put a tranny in a GM truck. Feel free to call me a liar while waiting at the Honda dealer as they replace your trans.

The 4 captain seats, with the bench 3rd row is the way to go.
