All soda has a very strong chemical taste to me. The good news is that I no longer drink any sodas.

Had Delta late July of this year. Lost taste and smell completely for a few weeks and like a light switch it all came back while on vacation.
But since it came back, I go through stretches of totally normal taste and smell and stretches of everything smelling stale and like cigarette smoke or like sewerage. Oddly enough everything i eat mostly tastes normal except for coffee and beef.

My weirdest thing after Covid was waking up in the middle of the night and smelling smoke. I thought the house was always on fire.

I get a smell I can't really explain. Like a clinical laboratory with with hint of gas/diesel (really lute)
I guess I've had covid, only sign I feel. Has been happening for about 2 months

Question: for those of you that have had covid, did your taste go away gradually or was it instantaneous? I’ve been sick for a couple days and was eating something this morning and noticed it didn’t have much of a taste. I can still taste sweet things but it’s duller and I can’t taste mild flavors right now.

I was sick for about 5 days before the smell and taste senses disappeared. It was actually at that point I suspected it was covid, as the symptoms for the first 5 days just seemed like a bad cold and I didn't think much about it.

I don't think I answered your question. Before the senses went away, I could still taste, though I had that bad taste in my mouth that is pretty common when I get sick in general, so that may or may not have been a gradual change related to covid. I do know that going from tasting a mix of sick breath and food and not tasting at all was instant. I went to bed having tasted dinner and woke up not being able to taste even something strong like the pineapple I had for breakfast.
I spent a lot of time that day eating all sorts of different foods and being amazed that I couldn't taste any of them. Just texture and the difference between the feeling of for example salt vs sugar on my tongue.

Any GI issues?
Husband and I are 12 hours apart on symptoms but he became violently ill vomiting and other end this morning. I have been running fever for two days and suddenly my taste is weird. I don’t have much in the name of respiratory stuff besides a stuffy then runny nose.

I didn't have any GI issues. My wife said she felt constantly nauseous throughout her illness like she did when she was pregnant. I maybe had a day of that thinking back, though it apparently wasn't enough to really notice.
I did have a lingering persistent cough that presented worse for me than her, as well as some breathing issues that were mild if present at all for her. I guess everyone is a little different.

Good to know. I told my husband I felt like I was pregnant yesterday, first trimester crap. Nauseated, exhausted, but with the bonus of terrible body aches and fever. (PS I’m not pregnant).
He went to urgent care and will have PCR covid results tomorrow. Flu and strep were negative.

Funny you mention the smell of coffee. After having covid, coffee smelled like cat litter. It was several weeks before coffee smelled like... coffee again

I never lost my taste or smell when I had Covid, but I have noticed that my body wash smells sour now. There must be one ingredient in it but it is so pungent to me. I bought a couple different ones and they have the same smell. I had my fiance smell them and she said they smell normal. I'm just so confused lol

7/9 to 8/4
Tastes are 75%, slowly returning.
Every once in a while I get a true aroma.
Other than that I can't get a smell resembling strong mildew and exhaust out of my nose.
Wife, no pics, had it two-three days.
Smells smoke, taste is <50% effective.

Had Covid back in early April and some smells are still messed up. My shits/farts smell like rotten tomatoes and other things like gas and coffee just don’t smell the same. They are distinct enough for me to know what I’m smelling but they don’t smell like they used to. Also some foods have a gamey taste to them if they are left over for a day or two.

Certain shampoos smell completely different. Went from a super pleasant smell to a sour smell.
Farts and shite smells earthy/grassy now.

I had a similar experience after having a stroke. First my sense of smell was really acute, I swear I could smell the individual grains in the grass and it was driving me nuts. Luckily that started going away after a couple months and then my sense of taste was off, one of the biggest affected was Zaxbys chicken fingers, they just didn't taste right at all and most foods tasted a little off
Sodas and sweet tea were affected pretty much to. Thankfully it's pretty much back to normal but it's weird how that happened to be so similar to what you guys are describing from Covid. I'm pretty sure I didn't have it, I had to get tested a couple times during that time and came up negative

This is a good article about why this is one of the hallmarks of the disease. People are getting caught up with death numbers. There are many gradations of illness that could have longterm effects, and as someone mentioned above, losing or changes in one's senses of smell and taste can often lead to clinical depression.

Had it in April of this year. The only thing I can say really smells different is my shite and piss. Best description I can think of is a very strong metallic smell
I have the same thing. Started noticing it more last week. Had Covid in early August.

My piss and farts smell different.
I briefly (like 2 days worth) thought bacon tasted terrible after my sense of smell and taste came back. Thankfull that’s all better. But I thought I was losing my mind about the piss and farts.
So weird.
