Outflow looks to be improving, notice it expanding westward into the Gulf. There might be some good news, it looks like winds are not responding to pressure falls, possibly because the storm expanded while the outereyewall was ramping up. Next recon is inbound and it will be interesting to see what they find.

HRRR - not a hurricane model but the best we've got until the runs this evening - is predicting landfall in roughly 7-8 hours right over Melbourne, FL.

The process of building an outer eyewall kind of makes a storm sloppy and it takes time to pull it back together. However, Matthew might be close enough to land now that it won't ever be able to recover from the ERC.

I mean that isn't true at all. The highest recorded was 27.8 feet.

It also looks like Matthew's telling Nicole to stay right where she is.

We joked about the Fujiwhara effect earlier, but the storms are within 873 miles of one another and the threshold to see them react to one another is 870 miles in most cases.

The first radar gif on this page makes it looks like it is going to hit dead Center on Hobe Sound, FL. Which is terrifying. There is a small Christian college right on the intercoastal waterway, and they didnt decide to evacuate the students until this afternoon. Asinine decision to wait this long. I know a lot of people down there, hoping everyone gets out ok.

My grandparents also have a beach house on campus. Prolly won't make it with the storm surge.

Streets in downtown Charleston flood during normal rain, I don't want to see what this monster can do.

Yeah, these inundation depth grids don't take into account flooding from rainfall runoff. There are several variables that will affect the additional flooding caused by runoff. In general, I would say if you are near a system that drains a good sized area, you could see a couple feet on top of the surge depths.

Also remember these inundation depths are a rough estimate based on projected path of the storm, which can change for the better or worse greatly.

Anyone have a clue as to when Charleston will probably lose power tomorrow? The rain is supposed to start in the morning with the heavier stuff in the afternoon/evening, but I just want to try and get as much shite done before blackout.

Katrina had time and was a larger system. This surge will be nothing compared to that. Still dangerous just not 30 ft dangerous

Local weathermen are reporting the situation in Charleston is going to be worse than Hurricane Hugo in 89.

Yeah he needs to pump the brakes on that. That's not even remotely true.

Rob Fowler is a little slow upstairs.
