Steady Hiring Added 147,000 Jobs to U.S. Economy in June

U.S. job growth continued at a steady pace last month, surprising economists who had predicted a slowdown in hiring amid uncertainty over trade and fiscal policy.
The country added 147,000 jobs in June, the Labor Department reported Thursday, above the gain of 110,000 jobs economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected.
The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% from 4.2%.
Revisions showed that hiring was stronger in prior months than previously thought. The number of jobs added in April and May was a combined 16,000 higher than prior estimates.
But there were caveats: Job growth was heavily concentrated in state and local government and in healthcare. A number of other sectors, including manufacturing and professional and business services, were flat or shed jobs.

Private-sector employers added just 74,000 jobs in June, down from 137,000 in May. That was the lowest number since October 2024, after hurricanes Helene and Milton put thousands of people out of work.
The bulk of the jobs added in state and local government were in education. That was likely a fluky gain that some economists reckoned came about because the adjustment factors that the Labor Department uses to smooth seasonal swings overcompensated for shifts in education employment at the end of the school year.

Many companies are in a “no hire, no fire” mode. They are waiting to see how tariffs, immigration and other Trump policies play out before making big decisions about employment. Inflation has been lower than some economists feared, despite the tariffs, although it is still above the Federal Reserve’s target.

Seems a bit of a mixed bag in this one, but still moving forward at this point.

This is where I am in. Interviews for days, but no movement!

Kind of what I’ve seen. No pink slips, but if someone leaves to go elsewhere, good luck getting approval to backfill the position.

Probably pulling that info from these reports:
quote:
Private sector hiring unexpectedly contracted in June, payrolls processing firm ADP said Wednesday, in a possible sign that the economy may not be as sturdy as investors believe as they bid the S&P 500 back up to record territory to end the month.
Private payrolls lost 33,000 jobs in June, the ADP report showed, the first decrease since March 2023. Economists polled by Dow Jones forecast an increase of 100,000 for the month. The May job growth figure was revised even lower to just 29,000 jobs added from 37,000.
We saw the hard partisans on both sides do this during Bush II, Obama, Trump I, Biden and now Trump. It’s all about what numbers one prefers to look at sometimes to pain the narrative they’re looking for.

They might as well pull the numbers of the two reports out of a hat, they aren’t even close.

When are economists NOT surprised relative to their predictions?

I interview dozens of people every single day. I don’t want to hire anyone, but I do encourage them to purchase drinks and snacks from vending, which gives me hundreds of dollars daily in passive income.

These reports are pointless, the “real time” data is never even close to accurate

That is a different report that came out yesterday from ADP, which looks at the private sector.

You do understand that these govt jobs numbers include city, county, state, and regional jobs
DOGE eliminated fed jobs only. Its very likely the fed firings led to the same people getting picked up by local agencies

Let's hope not. Govt jobs should never be counted as they are a drain on efficiency
