Starting Aug. 2 'Destructive Severe Thunderstorm Warnings' to Trigger Alerts on Phones
WWL-TV

quote:

WASHINGTON — The National Weather Service is rolling out a new way to describe a severe thunderstorm.

Starting August 2, any time a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued there will also be a breakdown of the damage threat. This will help to distinguish between a high-impact and a low-impact event.

The categories are baseline, considerable, and destructive.

If a "destructive" Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, this will automatically activate a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on smartphones in the warned area.

On average, only 10% of all severe thunderstorms reach the destructive category level each year, according to the National Weather Service, but those storms can cause massive damage.

They’re just going to push more people to turn off emergency alerts on their phones. I turned mine off after getting woken up by amber alerts in the middle of the night 3 different times within about a 2 week period and none of the alerts were even within 200 miles of me.

'

Amber alerts make sense, even if from afar because they probably think the suspect will be trying to high tail it out of whatever area the event occurred in. So I can see that, but for every thunder storm seems a little absurd. Get in a real storm and get a tornado warning come over car play, its enough to run you off the road.

it's not for every thunderstorm

did you see the new 'tier' system for severe thunderstorms that will be employed to determine which storms get alerts blasted out to phones?

Is tornado warning not enough? or is this something different?

Muh climate change. I just canceled a wedding venue because the woman wanted to reschedule the date based on what she described as climate change “ruining her plants.”

Crazy bitch. Stop giving these people money.

It's probably not a bad idea to bifurcate the thunderstorm categorization to indicate their severity a little more. Severe thunderstorm means canceling a BBQ and staying inside. A destructive severe thunderstorm should be a real threat to life or property.

When the tornado outbreak happened last month in my area, we went from a severe thunderstorm warning to a tornado warning within a few minutes. Could be a good example of using that higher classification on that one to at least spread awareness of a possible serious storm. At least then, people might keep their phones nearby and be aware of the potential for powerful storms and tornados on short notice.

Fair enough. They should offer option to have those alerts pushed to phones silently when they're in "do not disturb" mode then so people would just see it when they woke up
