That is my strategy. Started about a year ago. Bought the whole family hard-cover luggage that meets the carry-on dimension requirements for just about every airline. That plus a backpack is all I travel with for anything less than about 10 days.

Hearing stories about people checking bags with cancer meds and stuff--I can't imagine ever doing that. Just too much risk even before all the recent SW shenanigans.

Yeah I don't know what the Southwest's problem was this week but they have always been a good airline. Never had a problem with them and will continue to fly with them. Within the continental US they always do a really good job.......good business travel airline as well.......

Cash and Time are king to Americans. SW will retain almost all its customers either due to convenience (direct flights) or because they're cheaper than competition. Combination of both, on top of value.

What is your home airport because this doesn’t seem to be true IMO for MSY. I very rarely check a bag so maybe that doesn’t factor in to it, but they almost are never cheaper and the direct options are pretty limited, although most are out of MSY.

We’ll see, I’m already up 25%, I think we go below $30 before they find ballast in the short term, by that time I’ll be out.

It’s pretty well documented it was their antiquated crew scheduling/IT systems.

Except when they completely shite the bed for 8 days and counting. This is unprecedented for a US airline.

MSY is not a good hub for SW the past 5 years when I was tracking flights out there. You used to get $198 round trip regularly but that never happens any more.

I've lived in STL, DC, near MSY and use Houston regularly now. All have been better pricing in my experience with SW.

I fly almost every week during rush hour - out on Monday morning, back on Thursday night.

Apples to apples - Southwest is almost never the cheapest option. It hasn’t been for years. And for that I get cattle call boarding with zero upgrades. And they don’t even fly to some airports.

If you want their teaser rates, you have to be extremely flexible and be willing to use alternative airports or multi stop routes. That can’t be done easily with business travel.

And it’s holiday travel, so you know that way more people than normal are checking bags and traveling with kids.

Families looking for teaser rates for occasional travel a huge market for them. And Southwest Airlines just wrecked their holiday.

This is an astoundingly thorough frick up on their part. I can’t think of many examples when an otherwise healthy company is so quickly crippled by something other than war or massive fraud.

Yeah, I’ve never understood the SW fanboys. The boarding/seat process is downright humiliating. It’s been years since I’ve flown them, but I assume you can now pay extra to skip that song and dance? Otherwise I can’t imagine why any regular business traveler would opt to do that cattle call.

The program that schedules the crew to aircraft, skysolver, crashed when the winter storm started canceling flights at the major hubs. It is 90s technology that has been showing signs of weakness for a while now with how big and complex our route system has become. Mini meltdowns have happened a few times in the last 20 months. This storm was just the final nail.

It’s wild. My relatives were in a pretty severe accident on their 3rd trip to and from airport in two days trying to catch flight. That really chaps my hide, that they this potentially life changing event happened bc they were continually rebooked.

Direct flights. If you don't live in a hub city like Atlanta, Charlotte or Miami then you are going to be connecting to your destination and that introduces another layer of time, hassle and risks.

I hear ya. And direct flights have actually been the only reason I've ever flown SW, now that I think about it.

Although, funny enough, I was just reading a post on Reddit that linked an article about how SW's point-to-point setup is what keeps things like what's happening now from happening. That didn't age well.

I used to do SW through MSY relatively often, but when I really broke it down I realized the time I was "saving" by not laying over wasn't really saved because I'm doing 2.5 hours round trip driving time, paying $22/day to park, and arriving at the airport an hour earlier than I need to in BR. Granted, delays at the layover airport can really screw everything up so I see the value of both options.

We travel with carry ons and usually buy a bag at the destination for souvineers. Every trip to New York we come back with more bags than we left with.
