re: Southwest Airlines has cancelled 69% of its flights so far today.

I think loyalty will vary by city. New Orleans travelers for example will stick with SWA because of its prominence and relative limited alternatives.
Cities like Dallas will be interesting to observe. DFW provides a legitimate alternative to DAL with direct flights practically anywhere.

It’s not just SW. My friend had a terrible experience flying United from Aspen to Houston yesterday. While SW has sucked way more than the others, none of them have been good- for whatever reasons.

Worst fall out is people avoid SW at Christmas time.
I would add that more passengers will start bringing carry on's which will fill the overhead bins quickly and the expected will ensue.

Sure. Maybe for our families who are Top 5% earners but large majority...this won't even register.
I'll give you a local example. Lake Charles has American and United. I save $400-$500 by just driving to Hobby any day, all day.
American and United fares are almost double what SW are.
Give up, sir. You have no high ground with your position.

Cash and Time are king to Americans. SW will retain almost all its customers either due to convenience (direct flights) or because they're cheaper than competition. Combination of both, on top of value.
Which is probably why you aren’t seeing any urgency from them to counter this stuff with better optics.
And that’s why the airline industry customer service is shitty across the board.

Southwest has the history of being cheap, and they don't advertise on discount sites to keep that aura. In reality they don't have much advantage on other carriers, and lose out to discount carriers.
Plus the clientele is like standing in line at WalMart.
Most dedicated SW flyers won't be part of this so they will just book with them next time.

For the flights I fly I try to look at a flight aggregator plus Southwest for every flight I take. I would say SW is cheaper than the majors, but it's not a huge gap. Probably less than 100 dollar difference between SW and the most expensive major carrier for similar flights and times.

You are using Lake Charles anecdotes as your rationale for long term consumer behavior for a national carrier? Your overconfidence is amusing.

I wish the whole airline industry would just change to something else. It’s Totally miserable right now..
Spirit- low class crap; SWA - cattle boarding, …but hey, we have flight attendants who are funny! (Good luck flying now) delta/United- first class really only means a bigger seat; no real partition.
I’d pay more to avoid the above. But can’t do private flight rates as they currently stand.

What price point are you trying to hit? $1000-1200 round trip domestic but an elevated experience (greater space, free bags, fewer passengers)? There just isn’t a consistent enough market of passengers that will pay the premium required.

Air travel has sucked since Covid.
But what’s happening at Southwest is absolutely mind blowing. It’s rare to see a company frick themselves so thoroughly.

It must really suck for you having to buy 2 seats just for yourself and another 2 seats for your other 4 husbands

Absolutely not true at all. This is a computer system meltdown.
I’m wondering if they left enough funding for massive computer upgrades in their negotiations for better pay and benefits.

I am an OT baller so I buy a couple rows in case I gain more weight before the trip and I am super thankful that all my husbands get along. Also orange kitty refuses to fly coach.
Can the adults go back to discussing SWA now?

All the trashy adults can discuss all the SWA and Spirit Airlines y’all want.
Meanwhile I’ll be driving or flying private.

I mean, every freaking flight now is packed to the gills. it seems pretty much every American down to the guy on the street corner can now afford to fly. Maybe keep these shitty airlines for those people; and give other people more options. This is friggin America.

You can buy first class tickets and fly private if you want. This is America.

Yep.
Can’t blame them. They don’t have the tools to do their jobs effectively.
