This is why it's hard for me to take either party serious specifically on this issue. They've both flipflopped on it so many times to appeal to certain constituencies at the time that it's beyond ridiculous. We need a national policy. Congress needs to vote on it and we need to be done with it.

You're not wrong. The GOP embraced it for cheap labor for their agricultural base. The Dems embraced it because they know it can drown out the voting power of heritage white stock.

When? In the 80s when Reagan gave millions of illegal amnesty he was doing it as compromise for the democrats so they would reform the law.
