re: So The Dentist Says I Need A Gum Graft
I had this exact surgery done when I was a kid. The pain where the skin was cut out of the roof of my mouth lasted for a day or two, but you had to wear a special retainer that was acting like a bandaid. Food would always get under the retainer and it was the playing chicken game of has this healed enough to take the retainer out. The hole in the roof of my mouth grew back after a year or so, I dont even remember where it was anymore. The front of the gum aspect is no big deal.

re: So The Dentist Says I Need A Gum Graft
I’ve had this done multiple times. It’s not a walk in the park. You will not be able to swish or brush your teeth for at least several weeks, at least the area where the surgery was done.

Roof of your mouth will feel like someone took a match to it.

At least for me, it is not due to a hygiene issue. I’m 48 and have one cavity my entire life. I’m a clencher when I sleep, and I am also a Type 1 Diabetic. I’ve been told by multiple periodontists that gum recession has nothing to do with how hard you brush. Quite simply, it’s bacteria. Bacteria gets under the gum line and eats the bone away that stabilizes your teeth. I get my teeth cleaned four times per year now because some mouths produce more bacteria than others. I’ve had almost everyone of my teeth covered with gum grafts from my own pallet. I spent about $9,000 a few years ago getting it done. I now sleep with a night guard and my teeth/gums have completely stabilized now.

Ask yourself, do you grind or clench your teeth when you sleep? If so, that is likely the culprit.

I’ve had 2 grafts and I’ve also had my gums surgically cut to remove scar tissue buildup. Slight pain when they numb it with the needle and from there it’s just sounds and pressure unless they have to do the laser cut. The smell was the worst bc you can smell your gums basically being cooked

Talking from experience, do not drink anything with a straw before it is completely healed.

I'd get a second opinion.

I don"t trust my dentist at all. I feel he tries to upsell me on procedures. I'm going to find a new dentist.

How much is he wanting to charge you for this?
