So remember when JP councilman Chris Roberts committed suicide?
He had a lot of debt and was stealing money from an employer. Major tax evasion charges looming. Hanged himself in a wooded area off Engineers Road in Belle Chasse a little over a year ago. I live not far from the spot, and his parents live around the corner from me. I drive by it all the time.

A couple of months ago, they began clearing an area about 40 feet wide going back up into the woods. They stopped in this one spot, and you could see a beautiful live oak at the end of the path. It sat like that for weeks. Since this is an area of mostly trash trees, this big hardwood stood out. I thought to myself that this must be the tree.

I must have been right. A tree service evidently went in last week and took it out. Somebody went out of their way to get rid of this one tree in the middle of the woods.

So if I am right, is it weird to do this? Exact revenge on a tree because somebody used it to kill himself?

Here is the story from last year: https://www.wwltv.com/article/news/local/jefferson/former-jp-councilman-chris-roberts-dies-after-battle-with-depression/289-91fa2d4b-82c4-4bc5-8748-bd5abfa442f6

While it may seem weird to those who are not related to said person I can see where they would want it removed for their piece of mind. Is it right to do it, that’s a matter of opinion that we are all entitled to have.

That tree had a life too, and now it's dead even though it did nothing wrong.

He mightve done some stupid/selfish/corrupt shite but....It's their kid, man.
Looking at the tree probably reminded them of his suicide. Can't fault a parent for this.

At least they didnt douse it with Roundup.

“Long history of depression.” From the article.

Why was this guy in office? Can’t control your own mess, don’t try to control mine.

Had a neighbor whos daughter ran off the road one night on her way home from work and hit a tree and died a few miles down the road from us.
Her parents had to pass that spot anytime they needed to leave the neighborhood.
They asked the landowner to remove the tree and the landowner refused. Even went so far as to offer to pay for the tree removal and offered the landowner cash on top of that. Still the landowner refused to remove the tree.
Kinda thought it was a dick move on the landowner's part back then but it is his land to do with what he chooses to.

Having lost a child(not to suicide), I would almost counter with the tree is the last place their child was and, therefore, would find comfort in spending time there. Healing takes a while, but they're basically eliminating their own history. I would find solace in sitting at the tree and reflecting.

Doesn't sound like it was a tree they would continue to see anyway, if they had to clear out a path to get to it. Yeh, to each his own, but it sounds like attention seeking, like the "memorial" rear window decals on cars.

Why come here to poll? Just go to the stonebridge community dinners at the clubhouse and ask some of the folks there. Maybe some family friends of the Roberts will give you the answer you seek.

Or...let the family grieve in peace and not stumble upon crap like this on a message board (family are huge lsu fans and I know for a fact one is a TD member and has seen this).

He may have had his demons, but, he still managed to accomplish an extraordinary amount of good for Jefferson Parish.

Not arguing with you here, but most people just remember him being adamantly against removal of the bridge tolls.

I wonder why that was.

Depends. Was it a white oak?

If I had to drive by a tree/landmark where someone I love committed suicide, I'd probably want to tear it down because it's a constant reminder of that sorrow and pain. I don't think it's about revenge, it's about the reminder. I doubt they stood out there with an axe and yelled "With this axe I banish you and exact my revenge!"

A perfectly understandable position. Grief can eat a person alive. But what if the tree was not even visible from the road, as this one was not?

Is it simply the knowledge that it is there?
