Social media is obviously a massive problem in the world but I think an argument could be made that the advent of the smartphone is actually how we ended up where we are. 9/10 people have been truly oblivious to their surroundings and what is going on around them at any given moment of any given day for the past 14 or so years

Yes, this is correct. Cell phones have enabled behavior not doable before it. More cheating, more prostitution, more drug deals, and overall just more crime.

Electronics in general. Spending more time looking at a screen means spending less time looking around.

Absolutely....Steve Jobs had no idea, or maybe he did, that this electronic device would alter society so quickly and permanently.
It is producing a new generation of self indulging cowards that will not know how to speak to others verbally. They hide behind the phone/computer as a shield of false confidence.
Human beings are not designed to have so much immediate information to process. It is creating huge social issues.
The internet is evil, if you don't know how to use it!

The entire concept of general-purpose computer (as opposed to the specialized ones that run your fuel injectors or your alarm system) as a consumer device is worth questioning.

It’s a good way to avoid conversations with annoying people

Yes indeed. Set an alarm on your phone to blast away and use it as an excuse to bail out of a visit you don’t really feel like continuing.

None of this is correct.

You can’t even have barber shop talk or a simple friendly debate without someone pulling their phone out every minute or 2 to show “proof” to support their argument.

Me: I think Alvin Kamara is playing pretty good right now
Other guy: BS, let me pull my phone out and show you this 5 minute video and also a PFF link on why he isn’t

Me: Trump has been good for our economy
Other guy: BS, let me spend the next 25 minutes showing you different links on why he sucks for our economy
Me: Let’s just agree to disagree
Other guy: You hate FACTS!!

10 years ago those were both 5 minute conversations and at the end we just laughed about it and went on to something else

Nah. You're just redirecting the conversations with annoying people if you end up on the OT/TD. That dog don't hunt.

Yeah that doesn't happen. I love it when people on the OT make up bullshite or just say stupid things like "downfall of society"

It may just be my line of work, at the fire house there is a bunch of people, we are with each other 24 hour shifts. Politics and sports is argued quite a bit. Nowadays, young and old, it's hard to have any kind of debate, even about sports, without someone pulling their phone out for every point they wanna make.

I remember when my wife and I were dating.

We went to lunch at the Old Metairie Byblos.

There was a guy there with his daughter- I can still see the exact table they were at- and they were both glued to their phones- this was when smartphones just came out- and I couldn’t believe that they weren’t talking.

Now- our family is glued to their phones. I had to make a conscious effort last night to not take my phone out when she and I went out to eat.

It’s sad as hell.
