Senate Megabill Stuns the Clean Energy Industry With New Tax on Wind and Solar

Senate Republicans stunned the power industry over the weekend with a proposed new tax on wind and solar projects, part of a broader push to unravel incentives for renewable energy.
quote:
This weekend, clean energy companies were surprised by the sudden appearance of a tax that they hadn’t realized was under consideration. It would apply to wind and solar projects completed after 2027 if they use a certain percentage of components from China, the industry’s primary supplier of everything from critical minerals to batteries.
“At a basic level it is a fundamental break in the compact between Congress and the private sector,” said Jason Grumet, chief executive of the American Clean Power Association, an industry group. “It is truly unprecedented for Congress to design a punitive tax targeting one aspect of the American economy.”
Elon Musk, whose relationship as a key adviser to the president recently unraveled, called the Senate’s latest version of the bill “utterly insane and destructive” on social media.
“It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future,” said Musk, CEO of electric-car maker Tesla.
Wind and solar projects would qualify for tax credits only if placed in service by the end of 2027. The prior version of the bill allowed projects to qualify based on their construction start date.
quote:
Neil Bradley, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, called it a “strong, pro-growth bill” on X but added, “That said, taxing energy production is never good policy, whether oil & gas or, in this case, renewables. Electricity demand is set to see enormous growth & this tax will increase prices. It should be removed.”
The power industry is grappling with meeting electricity demand that is rising for the first time in a generation. The growth is largely due to the artificial intelligence craze and rush to build huge, electricity-chugging data centers.
quote:
The Senate bill also would end tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles after September, quicker than the House proposal’s call for eliminating them by the end of the year for most vehicles.
Musk stands to lose because many of Tesla’s customers claim tax credits for EVs, solar panels and home battery systems, and Tesla benefits from battery-storage tax credits.
quote:
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Friday called wind and solar subsidies “wasteful and counterproductive.”
“Subsidies are meant to drive prices down and boost supply,” he wrote in the New York Post. “But subsidizing wind and solar has done exactly the opposite.”
The Senate bill would continue tax credit support for technologies such as nuclear, geothermal and hydropower. Hydrogen projects would get more time before expiration, too.

So are they going to take down all the ugly windmills in west Texas and Oklahoma ?
There's several on a lease we hunt and make the area look like crap, the ranchers hate them but were handed easy money to put them up.
I've heard $50,000 per a year but not 100% sure if it's accurate

i believe there is a clause in ITC for a larger credit for "domestic content" already
why should we be giving a credit for using product not made by american workers and industry....

Agree. Looks like shite, but if you're gonna give me $50,000 in yearly income, I'm gonna have to take it.

It would appear that there is a way around this tax.

We were always going to need to build more of these and wind isn’t going to power it.
Also a reminder to the climate nuts that post on the internet. There is no escaping oil and gas.

It takes 800 (in optimal conditions) windmills to generate the output of a single nuclear reactor.
It takes 8.5 million solar panels to generate the same.
People (Musk, notably) only push for solar/wind because they invested in it too deeply. It'd be like forgoing modern blood tests because they believe Theranos is the future or something.

Sounds like they better figure their shite out quick if it needs to be in service by the end of 2027 to qualify.

Oh, so the media lies AGAIN? color me shocked.
So all they have to do is buy American, or even just Not Chinese, and they'd avoid the tax

You can put a giant dildo in my front yard for half that.

Yeah, this in spades. They probably need a longer transition period of say, five years, to spool up production of parts here. From a strategic perspective, we already need considerable portions of the critical minerals production and refining to be moved here too. The raw materials used in utility-scale solar and wind have considerable overlap with many other high tech fields, including defense.
We'll see what comes out after the bill is reconciled with the House. I don't entirely hate this surprise, unlike most surprises we get during these Congressional proceedings.

It’s discriminatory though. If you produce oil or lng you can buy shite from china all day long. This is bad policy. This board says the government shouldn’t pick winners and losers all the time, but is okay with it here because they don’t like the loser

This. Nuclear is the future. Not fricking windmills and solar panels. They can help sure, but to run the world you will need nuclear.
American uranium too.
Shout out $URG

$25k/year for a piece of modern art? Hell yeah. I'm thinking a big shiny black one like at least 25 foot tall, girthy enough to shade the front door from the southern am sun, but doesn't obscure the view from the balcony. Some big ol'balls to.

There may be some components from China but not the majority. Most majors actually have country of origin specs that prohibit material/equipment from China.
In solar and wind, the majority of the components are from China. More so solar than wind.

Same. And all it takes is one of your neighbors to do it. Then you may as well fall in line because the landscape is already ruined.

An apt description of Trump and how his mind "works".
We need those textile jobs back!
Of course all of this will be undone the second he dies.
