Seattle Drivers Keep Crashing at This Baffling I-5 Freeway Exit
Posted by saintforlife1

Even if you've driven northbound under the Freeway Park trying to exit at, say, Olive or Mercer, it can be a little stressful. But for southbound I-5 drivers trying to exit at Union Street (Exit 165B), it can be downright dangerous.
That's because most drivers, when they're exiting a freeway via an off ramp, expect some sort of gradual transition from high-speed restricted highway to low-speed, intersection-regulated surface street. At this exit, not so much any of that. One minute you're going close to 60 mph in an exit lane, the next you're in a sharp, nearly 90-degree turn with a 20 mph recommended speed limit, and at the end of that there's an intersection a short distance from the tunnel exit. Oh yeah, don't forget that you essentially pop into a tunnel right before the off ramp starts.

They should have a light inside that tells you if you should expect to stop at the traffic light outside the tunnel.

People are dumb. Taken that exit a ton of times with no issues. It’s never occurred to me it’s a sketchy exit

I see multiple signs in that video warning of the quick slowdown yet almost every car is exiting that tunnel at dangerous speeds.

Apparently those signs were just put up recently, after most of those crash videos.

Those poor bushes on the wall catch hell

That would be an entertaining view to have.

Reminds me of getting off I10 East at the Metairie Road exit heading into the city...

I just watched the video. I don’t see what’s so difficult about this exit. Anyone too stupid to not be able successfully traverse this exit has no business operating a vehicle.

Watching the video of the exit, if you crash at that exit, you shouldn't be driving a car. Even if you ignore the exit lane speed limits (doesn't everyone?), you have ample time to slow down and turn.

People are retarded. There's a couple of exits like that off I-110 in downtown Baton Rouge and us dummies in the South don't have a problem with them.

You've just described a good quarter of the people on our roads. I would worry about being hit from behind each and every time I took that exit this day and age.

Yeah. I'm not seeing what is so bad. No worse than exiting I10 east at Darlymple.
And the 10/110 split

Just looks like a bunch of morons on their phones.

I used to live in this area. The exits are tricky due to the volume, being squeezed between I-90 and 520, and there’s like four lanes next to each other that are all exit lanes for different exits—so a lot of drivers are frazzled by the time they make it down the ramp. That’s also one of the few parts of Seattle where people actually drive fast. Everywhere else in town it’s a race to be the slowest…
That said, I’ve taken that exit many times and never had an accident.

What was difficult there? Seemed more benign than the I-20 West exit towards Birmingham off I-75 / I-85 Southbound in downtown Atlanta.

OK, so maybe I have been living in big cities too long but it looks like a typical downtown exit to me.
It looks a lot like the Pearl St. exit here in Dallas.
