“We are talking about the withdrawal of foreign forces, hardware, and weapons as well as other steps that will ensure that the setup in the countries that were not NATO members back in 1997 would be reverted to what it was back then,” the ministry said. “These include Bulgaria and Romania.”

Russia wants troops out of Bulgaria so it has a clear route to Istanbul.

How much equipment will Brandon leave behind this time?

I contend we should not intervene in a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Feel sorry for the Ukrainians, but it’s not our fight.
But I’m daring Putin to attack NATO.

On Thursday, the Dutch defense minister told parliament that the Netherlands would deploy two F-35 jets, along with support staff, to Bulgaria to increase NATO’s defense and deterrence capabilities in the region, in light of Russian troop build-up around Ukraine. The deployment is expected to take place in April-May. The country also made available to NATO an amphibious transport ship. The Spanish minister of defense also offered to send fighter jets to Bulgaria and a warship to the Black Sea in light of the rising tensions.

This is what happens when you have a dementia-addled potato for a president. The rest of the world just drags their nuts across the US's face.

Would you pull out of Bulgaria?

All Russia has to do is increase fuel prices or cutoff the pipeline to the EU and they fold.
Maybe the EU shouldn’t have latched onto Russia like a tick.

Which is part of what this is all about.
Putin isn't going to full scale invade Ukraine...for now.
This is about testing the current President who he believes to be extremely weak, and seeing what kind of concessions he can get re: NATO.
If we show weakness, he gets what he wants and then after a short period of time ramps it up again.
He also probably wants Biden to be able to claim some sort of "victory" to help him, because he would much prefer Biden in power than pretty much literally anyone else.

I must have missed the part where we complied with this demand.
Edit: There’s no way an attack on NATO doesn’t a) lead to a full scale retaliatory response for all NATO countries, b) end in Putin be removed from power.
Russian GDP: 1.4 trillion
NATO GDP: 18 trillion
Not saying Putin isn’t crazy enough to try, but he would be just that...crazy.

I’ve never seen a President Overperform the way this one has. The last President loved winning but this one is all about outperforming all of his predecessors and he is doing just that.
Wonder if our Overperforming President will give Alaska back to Russia when they threaten us in year 3 of his term?

Yeah, that must be why the Dutch and Spanish are actually adding to the NATO arsenal....

This Turkish government and Russia have been rattling sabers at one-another for years. Part of that was the Turks using the Syrian civil war to attempt to annex large swaths of northern Turkey and to ethnically cleanse Syrian Kurds and Yazidi. The Turks also shot down a couple Russian jets.
Turkey is a NATO member, but has often been at odds with the other NATO members, including instances of temporarily locking down American military installations in Turkey preventing American personnel from entering or leaving.
Russia has had designs on Istanbul since the Crimean War.

He is absolutely not getting NATO out of Bulgaria or Romania. There is nothing really to concede from the defensive realist point of view.

I don't think he believes they will.
This is about seeing what concessions he CAN get on a variety of topics.

It's art of the deal. He's demanding something he won't get (Romania) in order to push the other side to compromise closer to what he actually wants (The Baltic States and Ukraine)

Imho, Russia would be at the English Channel in less than 48 hours. NATO is not the deterrent that it once was.

NATO won't do shite, because the US won't do shite, and Russia has the EU by the balls in terms of oil and gas.
And Putin knows it.
