Side note, I just found out recently that my TWIC card gets me into the TSA Pre Check line at airports....

You can get a passport card that fits in your wallet for like $30. I always get the card in addition to the larger passport book. You can’t use the card for overseas travel but it’s nice to have as a backup. And of course it’s realID compliant.

I just renewed my license a few months ago and didn’t even think about the new Real ID thing. Now I’ll have to go back in a few months and do it all over again. Wonderful.

True, but I dint have any of that stuff at the time and didn't want to go home to get it. I usually just rely on my passport.

Why would you use your passport for those?
You simply take your phone out and show them your license on the LA Wallet app.
I don't even know where my license is to be honest. I carry my passport when i fly, and anything else i use the LA Wallet app.

And, the passport card does not show your home address. No need giving that info up everytime someone wants to id you. Especially so if you have a college age daughter who hits the bars and has to show ID to whatever derelict the bar hires to work the door.

I will agree the passport is a pain and easily gets bent in your pocket.

The cost is the same. They don't charge any more for it than the standard ID. So the minimal extra paperwork is worth it not to have to rely on my passport to fly domestically.

Got my DL renewed about 3 weeks ago. Lady at OMV asked if I wanted a real ID. Didn’t ask for any additional identification or anything. Just said it’ll be $$$ extra. That’s it.

So why do we need a REAL ID again??? What is wrong with a drivers license such that we have to have a REAL ID?
