My dad is one, as are a number of family members and family friends. They don't find it derogatory. Also, all or most of them are back up north for the summer.

Those beach front condos are designed to be able to withstand total substrate washout and still stand.
Agreed, although this building obviously didn't perform as designed. Those buildings are likely supported by piles installed very deep into the ground. It would require one incredible sinkhole to undermine them.

Were they structural renovations or just architectural... big difference.
Not necessarily. Dumbass contractors could have screwed up something as basic as roof work by damaging something with equipment or overloading something. Wasn't that bridge that collapsed due to all the construction equipment on the bridge overloading it?

I've never met a snowbird who found the term derogatory. Hell, most of them refer to themselves as snowbirds.

NBC 6 reporter is losing her composure on air... starting to openly cry

Probably friction piles, if there was a dewatering contractor next door pulling water thru the subgrade, then the sand become fluid and loses its friction.
Not a P.E., just a theory.

now firefighters working to put out a fire at the site

eah... of the wild speculative theories... those that seem the most plausible at this moment are...
A) sinkhole
B) frick-up related to ongoing building maintenance/certification
ETA: and not necessarily in that order
Said roofing work was ongoing.... maybe the roofer set all his material in one area and overloaded the section starting a chain reaction after the initial failure
maybe a broken water main under the structure washed out the support in one area
corrosion of structural member
we can speculate all day....

Not to be confused with Snow Bunnys....Completely different video content...Or so I'm told....

Hoping most were back "home" for the summer.

this, and I lived in south FL for years

They’re allowed to call themselves that.

Now the part of the building still standing is on fire.

Not many sinkholes around Miami:

This happens all the time. However, in every case that I'm aware of, the result is roof collapse. It would be very unlikely that the contractor could add enough load to the roof such that the structure would fail before the roof supports gave way.

you think FIGG is an all woman firm? You are an idiot. FIGG was a well known firm with a lot of exotic bridge designs.
You sure are pissy. Calm down, Karen.

NBC 6 reporter: "architect I talked to says watching the video of the collapse tells him it's some kind of human error"

It's also a flat roof loaded with HVAC equipment, so it's not like they're stacking 100k lbs of roof tile on it. Any roofing work would probably indicate sealing penetrations and/or new membrane.
