They wish it was sand. Unlike barrier islands around here, Miami Beach is limestone, so water will dissolve caverns within overtime.

That said, I bet it was just due to structural issues. 80s concrete work was pretty crappy.

Wish I hadn’t watched that. Watching the right hand side hang on a little bit longer and then collapse...those poor people.

esp since you can see a light on in 1 of the condos in that part of the structure the whole time... until that section of the building then starts to tip over and crumble

Is that the elevator portion of the building?

if i had to guess. the structure on the top would likely be the elevator equipment room

Many will (justifiably) be sued into bankruptcy over this. At least one person will (justifiably) go to jail. Episodes like this don't happen in the absence of some gross negligence. Terrible.

read that they were able to rescue a mom and child from the rubble but they had to amputate the mom's leg to get her out.
So in the case of field amputations like this, do they knock the person out before they get started? Do they get a surgeon to the site to perform the operation? I mean that just sounds horrific.

Are you talking about the Google Earth image they used to show portion that collapsed?
Google Earth shows the property next door still under construction. It’s completely built now and is where the video was taken from.

hearing news people use the term "snowbirds" openly seems odd to me

obviously referring to the people from up north who come down south for better weather

but I would think they would find another way to describe them instead of using a term that some may consider almost derogatory

The "Dont frick with cats" doc, was hilarious at then end when NOTHING the did lead to the capture of that guy. Yet they take credit for it.

The mayor of miami dade also said it's mostly a Jewish community, but it's funny everyone I've seen on TV looking for their missing relatives has been hispanic.

I'm glad they included this relevant tidbit:
