If the building was old there is a good chance that a lot of the owners paid a fraction of the current value of the units. So they don’t necessarily have $ to fix it. Retirees on fixed income, LOTS of foreigners in that area. When it comes Time to vote and each owner has to cough up 100k or whatever to get it fixed, it is easy to kick the can down the road. Especially if a few of the board members don’t have the money. I have a family member in a condo 15 blocks from there who got hit with over 60k in fees to replace the windows and redo the pool.

This was essentially a waterfront condo in Miami, I doubt that's how it was and even so its absolutely not an excuse and 0 sympathy should be shown for that. ONe person said these were $600-700,000 condos. If that's the case and you can't afford it, sell and move on. Plenty of more affordable housing in miami.

Given that, who the hell knows what happened here but I have a hard time believing that building crumpled so badly without some major warning signs.

The problem with these condos is that the value of the property is it's location. I had a claim in that same building in 2018 with an oceanfront unit in the section that collapsed that, at that time had in $145K in coverage. I was in a building 10 blocks North yesterday that has $90K in coverage and Redfin lists it at $643K. I was in one 12 blocks South of it today (but not on the ocean side) with less than $40K that Redfin lists for $256K. It's only 593 SF. These coverage amounts are fine for everything that can possible happen - except for this. Their best shot is being able to find a well-insured liable party.

Who's the mayor? Ilhan Omar?

Don’t think so. Could be something like a Carlos Finkelstein.

The other thing I thought of was if they used post tension on the floors and in their "renovation" work accidentally cut some of the cables.

Probably not … after you cut one … you wouldn’t cut another…plus it’s very unlikely post tension is the only reinforcement in a high rise… conventional steel definitely there

Twitter thread of missing people

Man that is bone chilling.

Are these people residents or people in town renting condos on a vacation? Or both?

However he started he is now at worse a RINO or since Mayor’s office is non-partisan he hasn’t had a need to update party in voter registration to Democrat.

quote:

In 2018, Suarez voted against Republican nominee and later Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election and instead voted for his Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum for which he was criticized by fellow republicans. In 2020, Suarez didn't vote for the Incumbent Republican Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

In February 2019, he wrote an article with Ban Ki-moon about how Miami is defending itself from the effects of climate change.

Can you imagine the feeling you’d have if you had recently moved out of an apartment in the part of the building that collapsed?

Talk about give you perspective.

Suarez is the mayor of Miami. Miami Beach has a different mayor.

Well in your made up scenario, someone had $145k in coverage which means they had to buy it for $145k and now the value is $600k+. So they should have $450k or more in equity. So yes, with that there are “plenty of affordable options in Miami” just like I said.

Again, there’s no excuse for building failures. “Property values increased too fast” is a laughably ignorant excuse for anything other than making money.

They just reported one third of the missing are foreign nationals. What’s up with that?
