Rare death penalty sought for the man accused of killing Mandeville officer Liberto

On Monday they informed attorneys for Mark Spicer, 22, who is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated flight from an officer, as well as other charges, in the Sept. 20, 2019, shooting that killed Liberto and wounded another officer.
The last death penalty case tried in the 22nd Judicial District was in 2009, under District Attorney Warren Montgomery's predecessor, Walter Reed. A jury convicted Jamie Magee of gunning down his estranged wife and his 5-year-old son in Mandeville's Tall Timber's subdivision and sent him to death row.
Spicer is the third current defendant facing possible execution if convicted in St. Tammany. Jason Landry ad Steven Olivieri are charged in a 2018 carjacking that ended in a double murder, crimes for which Assistant District Attorney Collin Sims said prosecutors are "presently in that (death penalty) posture unless we do something different."
Liberto's death, the first for a Mandeville police officer in the line of duty in 50 years, brought an outpouring of grief for the popular 58-year-old veteran officer and father of seven.

I was interested a while back so I searched for crime in Mandeville:

In perspective, Baton Rouge had 90 homicides as of Sept. 10.

Awful case all around. Spicers dad is a contractor on the north shore and sent his kid to St. Paul’s where he was a very good football player and from all accounts a good kid (I know, I know). Anyway, got into drugs after high school and this is the result. The story I heard is that he was blindly shooting backwards as he ran and it was a lucky (unlucky) shot. He ended up behind the house of a white woman home alone in beau Chene and told her to stay away because the cops were coming for him.

Play stupid games....
This is purely a political move to make Warren Montgomery seem tough. Truth is, he is a career defense lawyer who is anti-capital punishment. This case will never be presented to a jury as a capital murder.

Been here my entire life and never heard of Warren Montgomery until he ran for office. I have yet to meet one person who has ever seen him in court. Idiots like CCST pushed him and he destroyed a well run DA's office (Reed's personal issues notwithstanding) and ran off alot of good prosecutors for nothing. Place is clown show now.

I went to school with that cat. He recently sued Angola over not having AC. If La ain't needled that guy it ain't gonna happen. At this point a death penalty case isn't worth the expense if they aren't actually going to follow through.

I knew Vince, a stand up guy.
I think we should abolish the government being the one who inflicts death on those convicted in death penalty cases.

The first parts of your post are correct. The part quoted above is 100% false and probably comes from the family or defense attorney trying to make Spicer sound less guilty. Fact is that he stood at the passengers window of Vinnies car and shot him multiple times through the window. He then shot the other officer and grazed the side of his head. An inch over and he would be dead as well. Let there be no doubt, he is a killer.
Source, I directly on ow the people involved.
A little weird- upon reflection the Mandeville locations of the Liberto killing in ‘19 and the ‘07 Jamie Magee double homicide are within easy walking distance of each other.
