So why are kitchen counters called that? Bathroom counters?
For the same reason people "google" on Bing or call every soda a Coke. Specific words can evolve to general, practical use due to a similarity in function.

They, meaning cashiers, really want you to put it in their hand. I put it on the counter a lot out of habit I guess, and have to immediately give a little apology in order to keep the peace. I don't understand it, but you know it's the little things in life.

What exactly makes it disrespectful? Inconvenient I suppose, but there is no ill will when it's done.
Is it supposed that you don't want to touch black person or something?

It is pretty rude to just drop money to a cashier especially if she has her hand out for it...

Not sure what to say - I’ve been on both sides of the counter. I never worked in a convenience store, but other retail places.

I’ve been not served bc I’m white, I’ve had things thrown at me by customers - and then there were creepy dudes that had to touch you with both hands when they paid.

I try to be respectful when I go places, but that goes both ways.

Damn, this blew up, 6 pages???

The emphasis here is that people need to chill. I've never had a contentious exchange in a convenience store before, I thought during COVID we weren't supposed to touch.

As a general rule, I don't report poor service to management, that's their job. I would rather just move on to more important things. I'm not after revenge, I just want to get through the day, go home and have a glass or two of wine.

I don't get upset over elections, losing football games or other BS. Life is too short.

One put out on the counter. While looking for the other. Either way, who gives a shite. He didn’t stab her in the eye with a pen knife.

I have seen the signs asking not to throw money on counter. Never knew what it was about.

And this is why BLM is around...dude stfu. Most people get upset by money being thrown at them. Just because it was a black person doesn't mean it was the ghetto. Jesus christ

it dropped out of my hand onto the counter.

Had this happen once to me. I knew how it was perceived by the clerk and before she could say anything I apologized and said it dropped and wasn't trying to be rude

I didn't even know this was considered rude or was even a thing until I read this thread.

There are certain groups of people that take offense to it. They tend to view it as you not wanting to touch them because you think they're dirty/beneath you/unworthy/fill-in-the-blank.

It's funny, because in other cultures, it's actually considered rude to hand money directly to someone. In Europe, for instance, you tend to see trays by the cash register for placing money.

I was getting something at the gas station and had a black male cashier. I asked how his day was going and he answered something like “getting after the hustle.” I said “attaboy” and he stopped and put a finger in my face and said “don’t call me boy.” I said sorry, it was just an expression and he went off about white people calling him boy all his life.

While he was being ridiculous as was the lady in the OP, I’m sure there have been enough racist interactions of people calling him boy or somebody throwing money on the counter for it to be triggering to them.

That is exactly why I do not accept being called "white boy" by a man of color.

I would never ever call a black man "boy", and I don't negotiate that fricking word/phrase/slur or give license to call me white boy from any one, particularly with men of color. This is a gross violation of the ancient contract of mutual respect with me.

Call me white devil, white mother fricker if you MUST slur, any thing but white boy.

I do not know just how this came to be, but something snapped in my brain with that word never ever to be rationalized, and in some tragic way, it is the closest thing that I am truly willing to die for.

I live under a conscience fear that this attitude may one day place me in a compromised position, but some mother fricker is going to bleed with me that day.

If you can't intellectually accept my explanation that "white boy" is the n***** word to me, there will always be a chance that my next explanation may involve me bashing your damn skull into a powder so fine, you would need to alter the fricking Mohs scale.
