Do you all get an incentive for summer school? All of our kids and others we know keep getting messages about how, your child is not required to attend summer school for meeting all the requirements, but we encourage student to look into this program.

Is there some money DOE or govt is giving out? Seems like this crap and everyone on a IEP is a new scam by schools.

Those teachers get thirsty over that summer break.

Teachers get paid to facilitate summer school. Summer school is completed on a computer usually. So, yes, you can have a kid do jack shite all year in the actual classroom, but if he can get through a computer program that lets you retake assessments over and over, they get credit for the class.

The hate for yall’s kids teachers is nauseating here. You want your kids to learn things, right?

I had to take summer school multiple times and I would usually finish those classes about 2-3 weeks early but still had to "show up" for each of the classes in order to get credit so I usually ended up watching a bunch of movies or playing the educational video games that they offered.

Extra pay, yes. I never do it though. One of the reasons I’m a teacher is for the time off.

negative. It’s lowering the standard by expanding what it means to be learning disabled or have an “exceptionality.”

Some special Ed kids are never going to leave their mama’s house, god bless them. Many of them are just behind or maybe a little cognitively deficient (slow). And are forced into the same classes as everyone else (it’s all about being “inclusive”)

All of this shite is because of lawyers and politicians, not teachers or administrators.

Have you ever seen any kids get singled out as a "bad kid" and are treated differently thus leading to them being "left behind?"

Not really. I’ve done most of my teaching in high school. That sounds like some pre 12 year old stuff. Im sure that type of thing happens in elementary school where the same teacher deal with the all day for a year.

Maybe I am just paranoid but I went to a smaller high school (class of 100 kids) and they would single out kids in a classroom that were bad and essentially ignore them.

how do you think football players can start college early, etc. The horror the teacher should be paid for the work they do.

In our Louisiana school district, almost all of summer school is "credit recovery" meaning you did not pass the class during the school year.

Depending upon what the issue was (maybe failed too many classes, maybe didn't attend class enough minutes, etc) each child is assigned to a computer program, designed by the state, to make up what needs to be made up.

It's basically all independent study. The teachers do get paid a daily rate, but basically they are there simply to keep track of the kids and answer questions.

I know in Houston area, it's completely different. Kids take actual classes for original credit during the summer, either just to learn, or maybe to boost GPA, or maybe to be able to graduate early. One of our friends who teaches in Spring Branch ISD was in town for Garth, and she was telling us how she is teaching an actual class this summer for original credit.

teaching summer school is peanuts. also remember most teachers get pay spread over 12 months, not just during the school year.

A student taking summer school in a south louisiana public school is either a moron or a lazy frick. Yeah, I said it.

Everything is already so watered down, the only way you can fail is if you're truly a dumbass, or just don't give a damn. Credit recovery, grade recovery, attendance recovery - it's a fkn joke.

Eight more years and I'm done.

I don't teach public school. I make the same amount in summer as any other time. Public school teachers generally do get additional compensation for teaching during the summer.

Put your head high into the air. No, even higher. You see those kids in China, India, and Croatia (yes, Croatia)…same age as your kids?

While many on OT thrive in finding friction points with teachers (beyond me why this makes sense to some), those kids are learning. Efficiently, too!

Fast forward to when tech rules most corners of the world and not too distant future, when Silicon Valley is a relic and 5:1 tech companies are in China and India to US….those kids will control your kids.

Time for a mindset change, else prepare for the inevitable.

Most have covered basic summer school or "credit recovery", but your school might be offering Extended Year Services, if your kid has an IEP. There may or may not be grants for it beyond what the extra money schools get for kids with IEPs

Here is a link to a fact sheet about it.

That is scary and seems inevitable to me. I worry for the future more than I ever have before. It's likely not pretty.
