Was wondering that yesterday. They could be taking photographs of military bases, but satellites can do that. I doubt we get any info, but I guess the answer would lie in the debris that’s collected.

Could be images (still or video), as it is my understanding that the spy sats the Chicoms have aren't super high resolution.
I've also seen speculation that it was gathering sigint because a balloon at that altitude can pick up radio waves much easier than a satellite can.
I've also seen speculation that the second balloon that was crossing Central America was some type of relay station for the one crossing CONUS.

The balloons may have also carried devices capable of spreading malicious computer worms like the Stuxnet virus...eg, we shoot it down over soil, and the virus somehow jumps onto devices on the ground, and spreads from there...
Or it was just a hoax to see how we would react...

I heard one military expert say they can see what they want from satellites…
This was lower and they were listening…
I think they are working on technology for disrupting our commerce… banking …infrastructure… and methods to tap into it..

They’re collecting the debris. The debris field is around 7 miles, which is why they said they didn’t shoot it down over mainland.
