Why is it some places do one and not the other? And why do I always assume the wrong option?

From my understanding, those companies that still use the swipe method are charged more for a processing fee since the swipe method is less secure than the chip method.

Eventually, all companies will be using the chip method, however many won't upgrade until their terminals need replacing, which send the wrong signal to an educated consumer who is worried about potential fraud.

It's gone from them asking "credik or debik?" to me asking "chip or swipe?"

I always picked the wrong one so I ask now.

And there are still some places that have to take your card and either swipe or insert themselves.

I remember in Europe back in 2011 everywhere already had a chip and servers brought the chip reader to the table rather than take your card away. They've been way ahead of the USA in this regard.

Had to help dad with putting in new credit card equipment here recently.

Here's the deal on swiping versus inserting chip cards.

If you don't have a machine that can read the chip (IE the user SWIPES the card) then in the case of that card being used fraudulently , YOU are responsible, if however you have a chip reader then your credit card processor is responsible.

Now big companies like Wal Mart or whatever, they have other deals with credit card companies so that doesn't apply to them, but the little guys don't and so are only covered by the law, which says that if you have a chip reader and a card is used fraudulently and the card holder disputes the charge, you aren't responsible for the charge, your processor is, but if you have a swipe machine, you are responsible.

Adventure Pets in Mandeville. Buy dog food and they physically take your card and key the numbers into the computer register. Then the swipe machine prints out the receipt. I've never understood it but whatever.

The Albertsons off old Hammond hwy/Airline took almost 2 years to get their chip reader in. I can't remember where I went to the other day and they said they've been waiting on their chip reader since March, of last year. I have no clue why all places don't have the chip reader by now. Seems like it's fairly easy and not an expensive item to purchase or set up.

The correct answer is that those companies that have switched to chip readers will not be responsible for fraud and the fees associated with it. Smaller companies that have not yet switched will be responsible for the fees. I'm not sure the deadline for the complete switch over. The cost to switch to chip readers are the reason smaller companies haven't yet done so. Its a gamble to convert at this time.

Chick-fil-A on college swipes. No way that are paying more for the swipe service.

Jimmy John's is the worst. I swipe my card, it says use chip reader. So I put my chip in and it says can't read chip, swipe card. Then I have to swipe my card again for it to work. Happens every damn time.

Chick-fil-A, because of their large volume of transactions, more than likely has a separate and one-off agreement with their credit card processor.

When you get to be that big, the same rules don't always apply for large corporations vs. mom and pop.
