A new study suggests that pugs face such serious health conditions they can "no longer be considered a typical dog from a health perspective."

Research from the Royal Veterinary College has revealed the health of pugs is now substantially different and largely worse than other dogs.

The study compared the health of 4,308 pugs and 21,835 non-pugs.

UK pugs are almost twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually, compared with other dogs.

Brachycephalic, or "brachy" dogs - like pugs, bulldogs or boxers - are bred for their distinctive looks.

In recent years, pugs have increased in popularity, with a five-fold increase in Kennel Club registrations of pugs from 2005-2017.

All about the pug life.

They're funny as hell, but I've never been certain they are actually dogs.

I had a black pug one named Charlie Murphey. He was a cool dog but had tons of health issues.

You'd be surprised at the number of fit pugs. But yes.

All that inbreeding is why pugs are at the bottom of canine intelligence levels and health concerns.

My in-laws have a pug. It seems very high maintenance, and I think it oinks instead of barks. My 11 year old black lab that sleeps 16 hours a day is far, far more athletic and dog-like.

Pugs are adorable though.

Butters will be 15 soon and he didn’t have any major health issues when he was younger.

He is half deaf now and has some doggie dementia occasionally but that’s because he is an old man pug now

That's not the norm at all for pugs.

They sleep a lot and are pretty low maintenance on average. But obviously that doesn't mean they all are.

No I don't mean they want walks and attention all the time.

I mean they literally require constant medication or vet visits. Sort of like an English Bulldog with the wheezing too.

Butters only went to vet twice a year cause of pet plan with Banfield (Petsmart).

He is on a med now but that’s just one to help his dementia and totally optional

Hell when he was younger he used to hike 3-5 mile hikes with me on a regular basis. He loved it.
