The second bag was just D51/2NS with no additives charted. It’s recorded as 50ml/hr and recorded as stopped 30 min after starting. When the baby coded 1.5 hours afterwards, the parents see that the fluid bag is empty.

Is it possible that they accidentally set the rate to 500ml/hr instead of 50ml/hr? That would I fuse the whole bag in 2 hours right? 30 minutes plus 1.5 hours is 2 hours.

Does this look like a young man in distress? This was literally minutes before they put a pressure sleeve on his IV bag and roughly 3 hours before he went into sudden cardiac arrest. Why the hell didn't I take him home right then?

I don't have any useful words for you right now. But just wanted you to know someone out there was thinking of you and praying for you right now.

I can’t imagine the pain or questions you must have. Just know you have people you’ve never actually met praying for you. I hope one day you will have answers to terrible questions you should never had to ask.

Damn man. Just damn.
There's a pretty strong Camer community in the Houston area. Not sure if your wife knows many of them yet but that could also be a source of support as well as the church as you mentioned earlier.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

An urgent care clinic is not a place where patients are watched for 6-8 hours more

I looked up the place and it’s actually one of those free standing ERs not connected to a hospital. I’ve heard mixed views on all those popping up in certain states.

But like you said......not using an IV pump to give iv fluids to a child (especially one you see awake and alert in that picture) goes against basic standard of care for Peds.

That place is saying they are set up to care for children and they don’t even use IV pumps?! Something is wrong with this place.

Beautiful young man! I would be angry and would definetly need some serious help after this. As the photo shows you had no clue and cant blame yourself. I really think something needs to be done with these places because parents assume that when they take themselves and their children there they are getting proper care. Judging by your photo something went terribly wrong

I am sorry for your loss and hope that you and your wife can one day find comfort. I read through the events you described leading up to the arrest and a couple of things you mentioned stood out.
My concern in this situation would be an air embolism. You mentioned that the nurse poured some fluid out of the IV bag before administration. That pouring of the fluid allows air to enter IV bag. This air would need to be properly “burped” out of the bag before connecting the IV tubing. Once the bag was spiked and the pressure sleeve was applied any air remaining in the IV bag will become entrained. I have personally seen this occur when a nurse applied a pressure sleeve to IV fluids when bolusing a patient prior to a labor epidural. Typically the large volume of air required to cause complications in an adult prevents this from occurring but with a two year old it’s likelihood is much greater. There is testing available through a post mortem that will detect air embolism.
It’s tough to arm chair quarterback this without knowing all of the details. As a parent your situation has really hit close to home and I hope you can find the answers you’re looking for.

What was the original reason for them keeping him there?

A fever and virus-like symptoms are usually an in and out thing at these clinics. Did the doc ever explain what he was concerned about and why he wanted to monitor him for Hours?

It sounds like there was a condition he suspected and wanted to rule out or he realized they fricked ou some how and was monitoring him just in case.

It could have been but I swear I heard her say it was glucose. They had done a saline flush just after taking his blood and before they connected the IV bag. The doctor and the nurse were specifically saying they were trying to get his glucose level higher but it was not extremely low. 62 according to the blood results.

Redstick, am I reading that you remember the nurse saying she was giving glucose and she pushed it directly into his line by his wrist?

If that was concentrated dextrose intended for slow IV infusion then that is a very serious problem.
