I've seen these on the web and wondered if anyone here has any knowledge on them.
My son's birthday is coming up and they have a need for extra ice for drinks when they have company, which is quite often.
Thanks.

Had a friend buy a portable ice make for his office, makes ice pretty quickly but the biggest issue is that the compartments are not insulated, it does not keep the ice frozen. So ice does not pile up in there because it melts too fast. You need to transfer the ice to the freezer
If you do purchase one, i think it would be beneficial to have one with an insulated compartment. DOnt cheap out and you can probably avoid this
It is a relatively small amount of ice but should be plenty for a few drinks

Why not just bring an ice chest to one of those ice places and pay $2.00 for 20 lbs of ice

My son is married and I have two grandsons thanks to them.

We have one at a satellite office, seems to work pretty good.
Fill the water trough, it freezes it to ice; then the ice that melts it catches and refreezes to ice again. It tells you when you need to add more water.

Thanks, they just need it for these gatherings instead of all the bagged ice they have to buy.If it's any good it should pay for itself over time.

I haven't used the Opal countertop unit, but it is the cheapest nugget machine.
I got a Follett 7 series unit for the house and it is fantastic it makes ice pretty fast to keep the bin full even during use. There are a couple of models. I got the one that holds 7lbs of ice in the bin and recycles the water from ice melting so I didn't have to run a drain line. The Follett is more expensive, but you can get one in good used condition for about $1,500 on facebook marketplace in Houston.

I've seen models for use at campsites, tailgating, etc.
They're cheaper ($400) than full size residential machines. Pretty cool.
As someone else here pointed out, they're not insulated and the ice will melt as soon as the power is off.
The one I saw had no water supply line. Just pour in bottled water.
Lack of connected water line really helps simplify things.

I have had one for about 5 years now
Love it. Use it daily as my primary ice.
One of the better appliance purchases I've made.

i had one (not an opal) that would build mold/slime constantly if it wasn't left on all the time.
is that a problem with this icemaker? do you leave it running 24/7?

Not at all. I maybe have it on 8 hours a day
I do have a reverse osmosis filtration system. I'm not putting straight tap water into the system. If you were doing so, that could be a potential issue.

Frididaire Icemake at Walmart
I have the one above. Bought it for our travel trailer for when we go camping. What people have said is correct. It's awesome bcs it makes ice every 7 minutes. The downside is it doesn't keep the ice frozen. So the ice just melts and get's recycled to be frozen again. Bcs it makes it so fast it's a little soft. So it melts pretty quickly compared to regular ice.
What I do is take it out this ice maker then I put it in a ziplock and drop it in the freezer. Once frozen harder, i break it up and put it in the ice tray. I've got ice for days.
All in all it works great and is only $100.

Not worth the effort ..at least the two I have had. Bag of ice much simpler. Keep an extra bucket in the freezer. These are ok if you have no other option.

This would not be their primary source of ice, their fridge has an ice maker but it runs out during the times they have company.
This would be for mixed drinks and such on those occasions.
He can get bagged ice for the beer.
Bunch of dang drunks,haha.
Young and having fun.

Then I believe it will be perfect for that. It's what I use it for when we aren't camping.
