An additional problem is that water is very cold
Yep. Probably better than crashing over land, but the water would be hypothermic in minutes I’d assume

I have to imagine the only thing that makes sense to me is that the Blackhawk didn't inform ATC before leaving. They easily should have seen the plane on approach even if a mix up.
No idea what was going on in that Blackhawk.

Interested in how TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance Systems) interact between commercial and military vehicles.
Certainly the regional jet has TCAS and should have received warnings, but only if the mil helicopter was also TCAS equipped and transmitting.

Just heard my former trainee worked the day shift, thank God. Bad deal.

It’s a miracle in itself that it was over the water. Haven’t heard anything about anyone being hit by debris.

I don’t understand how ATC fricks up this bad
This isn't on ATC . The RJ was on short final, very vulnerable , and if the Blackhawk departed Bolling on a Advisory frequency the Tower and the RJ would have no clue.

From the Kennedy Center footage it looked like the Blackhawk flew right into it. Horrible footage.

Does anyone know where to find the scanner? Thanks

Has it been confirmed a Blackhawk?

I don’t think that’s survivable.

Yes confirmed by multiple outlets and I think the White House.

Also did the Blackhawk turn off it's iff? ATC probably sees it on radar and would desperately try to communicate.. The plane was screwed either way.
Maybe too low for fast enough radar...

I’m told TCAS alerts are muted at low low altitude to avoid distractions for pilots that are seconds away from touchdown.

Yes the White House confirmed that it was a military helicopter and multiple others are saying it was a Blackhawk.

Would be hard to pin it on ATC based on the location
Posted on 1/29/25 at 9:28 pm to jcaz
It's so the system doesn't give false alerts to for aircraft on the airport surface.

I hope this doesn't turn into some rogue military guy wanting to suicide himself in some gruesome, grand way.
