Almost all attack victims that show up in my wife's ER were attacked by that breed.
The attacks from the pissy sheep dogs and less aggressive breeds are not usually as serious. Something about that breed makes them more viscous when they feel provoked and less likely to back down. This, combined with what is a strong dog already has encouraged unscrupulous breeders to produce dogs for fighting.
Sadly, there are a lot of great pit bulls out there with fantastic owners.....but without knowing them or their dog, you are more than justified in worrying about your family's safety around the animal. I would be worried if my neighbor's had a pit bull instead of a Husky or a lab.

You are putting dogs and people on the same level?

I usually taste my food before I dive in too

I bonded with it as much as one is supposed to bond with a dog.
did my world revolve around the dog? Did I take it to "puppy daycare" and spend thousands on it? Did I pay a shite pile of money to clean it's teeth or get any other shots other than a rabies shot? No.
Was he healthy and happy? Yes.

Btw pits can be great dogs. I've spent extensive time with them.

seems to me like you're too cheap to be a happy pet owner.

he was getting up there, yes. poor guy (and people he chased and attacked. lol.)
so this is one of my dogs i found deep in the forest. she was starving and < 1 year old. now an incredible dog.
she looks like a pit when she's about to get food. and hopefully she looks like one right now-i'm at my gf's house in the hood and she's staring down two unsavories who are passing by.
she has some serious jaws/teeth. but i would pretty much bet my life that she wouldn't harm anything more than a small rodent, even if those thugs outside were to attack me right now--the little ingrate.

I saw the pics of the dogs/child on Facebook. Looks like the dogs were show dogs. The saddest part is the Mother of the child commented on a picture of the child playing with the dog just last week. Something along the lines of "how stupid people are thinking pits are dangerous"
edit to add: Sounds like this isn't the first time it's happened

Pretty much. If they have so much confidence in the dogs they should accept responsibility for its actions.
Can't people's hands be considered lethal weapons? Why couldn't owning a dangerous breed be the same? It would just tie you to the dog as you should be.

I have a bulldog and people think she is a Pit.
She looks more like a boxer than a pit too.

If the owners are doing a poor job at HANDLING or TAKING CARE of the dog, then you call for criminal charges. This is not a case where you can say, bad job on the owner for poor care(or at least all evidence isn't there).
If I own a dog, whether pit bull or chihuahua, if that fricker gets loose and does damage, THEN can you sue the owner. In a case like this, where a dog kills the kid and mom goes and hides somewhere in fear of being attacked herself, can you really blame her? Did she tell the dog attack and kill the kid? Not that we know of. Was the dog poorly taken care of? You can make a case, but it's a pit bull and officials, jury and the judje will ALL look over this, for the simple fact it's a pit.
Again, if I'm walking my dog and let him off the leash, and he attacks, then you can sue me. I'm the one bought him out to the public and a tragedy happened because of it. If YOUR dog is IN IT'S HOME, YOUR HOME, and attacks someone IN YOUR HOME, when all evidence may not even be out yet, how can you really press charges and SUCCEED IN COURT on the owner?

quote:You mean charge the owner for murder or manslaughter? It's because you can't. Especially if it was in the home. If it was in public then you MAY have a case depending on what all happened but in this one you don't. Plain and simple.
I'm talking about criminal charges

I'd be willing to bet. I don't care what breed of dog you have. A dog will not bite the hand that feeds him for nothing. I'd put money something else happened before this dog attacked, cops just overlooking it because of the fact that it's a pit bull and they have a bad history.
And that's why it's a bad idea to have a pit bull around a small child. Little kids have no idea about how to handle animals. They want to play wit them but often times this means things like pulling it's tail or unintentionally hurting it in some other way. A good example is my daughter who we got a kitten for last year (she was 4 at the time). Fast forward one year and the cat will have nothing to do with her other than slap at her if she gets too close all due to my daughter being too aggressive with the cat when we first got her. With a cat, something like this is not a big deal. With a pit, it's a recipe for disaster.

yup. my dog probably doesn't have an ounce of pit in her, but that look above is "pitlike," because she's flexing her jaws in preparation for treats.
here she is 1 minute later after her inner-pit subsided--looks like the bird dog that she is:
