Pipelines for Dummies- HELP
Posted by Klondikekajun on 5/12/21 at 6:40 pm116
Excuse my ignorance, but can one of you O&G baws explain in simple terms why pipelines are complicated? Is it that technical now that pumps and valves can’t be manually operated to overide a cyber attack on controls? Safety regulations?
I know I’m oversimplifying this, but why does it take a week or more to get it back online?

Automation cuts people. Cant operate manually without people

There’s a lot to it. Multiple inputs and outputs points, complex financial tracking, lift station and directional equipment controls. Someone who isn’t typing in an iPad can probably give a more in-depth explanation.

This is all a false flag operation by big oil to correct for last year's inventory bloat and price drops.

They have to hunt down the son of a bitch who opened the email attachment that installed the ransomware in the first place.

I think there is some manual controls available. The issue I believe is the safety and pressure monitoring is computerized.
My knowledge is based only on being in several control rooms so very limited knowledge.

They better sign them up for phishing and spam training ASAP.

I believe the colonial pipeline is a “products’ line. That means that one minute there may be diesel fuel in it and the next minute it may contain jet fuel. Sensors detect the specific gravity of the fluid and route it to the proper lateral or holding tank. Computers control all of that.

With all of the O&G experts we have on this board, I'm disappointed with the replies.

Office Depot doesn't stock enough clip boards and #2 pencils for this to be run manually.

It's a 5,500 mile long machine, is it supposed to be simple?

SCADA system
LEarn about SCADA systems here
I’ll also add that you can’t man a pipeline effectively, especially on where your SCADA system also keeps your pressure below MAOP. You can hire as many men as you want, but pressures are maintained electronically.

Yup, and nobody wants to pay people to sit around and wait for an emergency, in spite of the fact that that is exactly when you need them.

It's not an O&G problem - it's an IT problem - the industrial controls are automated (software) and the security of the software was compromised allowing hackers to access some undefined (so far) level of control of the pipeline. Forensics will determine the source and ultimate threat seriousness - whether that becomes public info is TBD.

Boy there are some pipelining mother frickers around here...
SCADA/HMI can have some built in logic or controls, shutdowns, alerts or trips, but ultimately there is someone sitting on a console starting, monitoring, stopping that line.
