People who don't watch or read the news

This was brought to my mind because of thread about the Advocate article that mentions a young gay man who didn't know he was at risk for AIDS. Unfortunately, I can kind of see how this ignorance can happen. I know several people, some of them intelligent folks, who never watch or read any news source. They use Facebook or TikTok but won't read news or research online. They watch movies and TV shows on Netflix or the equivalent but no news or educational programs. But these people have no clue what is going on around them. War in Ukraine? Major hurricane? No clue. I asked one guy how his family in the Tampa area fared after the storm. He mumbled something about having heard "something" about a hurricane but that was it. Dude, all the early forecasts had that thing headed for Tampa. I can understand having to take a break and step back from an overload of constant info (questionable at that) but because news sources ARE fallible, I tend to check out a bunch of them. I just don't understand people who can go around in complete ignorance. And then go vote.

I almost envy them in a way
For better or worse, they're shielded from the shitty happenings of the world

I don't watch the news very often. I'll glance at the local news website maybe once per day but that's about it.
Other than the financial markets I have no idea what the major news stories are right now unless I read about it on here

I never watch the news and read a few digital articles sparingly. I’m too busy raising children, working a demanding job, and building wealth to care much about what is now considered news.
I stay kind-of up to speed reading long form journalism well after the dust settles.
“Where do you get your news” was a major question in a jury selection process I underwent not long ago. I told them “I don’t watch news and I try my hardest not to read it either”
Judge legit LOL’d

Right there with you.

The news is almost entirely dedicated to promoting fear through lies and sensationalism. There's no reason to subject oneself to the ceaseless barrage of negativity that they try to pass off as news.

I get my news from the OT and poliboard. Which is to say I don't get any news at all.

Only news I find out about is what you morons talk about.

I don't watch or read any news.
If it isn't talked about the OT or someone ask me about something at work, I likely don't know about it.
I simply don't care about 99% of the stuff happening around the world.

I'll take those people over the ones who literally have a 24/7 feed of Fox or MSNBC. These types are just awful to be around. Always angry/ranting but never actually taking action about things they can control in their own lives/locally.

National news outlets are nothing but political spin these days.

guarantee you they're happier than the folks that stay mad 24/7 by whatever the opposite political party did this week

This is one of the great conundrums of my adult life. How do I remain informed about world events without becoming frustrated and agitated by the sheer volume of partisan manipulation and propaganda which now permeates the media?
I try to watch a Big Three evening newscast every night understanding it will be slanted left. Currently it's ABC because they usually have a good story / Made In America newscast closer.
I recently spent an extended vacation without internet or TV and had no clue the stock market was melting, so I guess it's easy to see how people could be completely detached from anything going on around them.

as the news becomes more akin to propaganda, whether you choose to watch it or not you won’t be any more informed.

And I will add, of course, any reporting of anything is almost always slanted toward left-centric ideology. So you get the event for 1 second and the slanted talking point for 30. ex. CNN's Don Lemon covering hurricane Ian. Here's the hurricane, now let's talk about how climate change is causing it and why and shame people who don't believe it.

A lot of people are going to say this, and they're right. However, a more engaged population who at least tried to understand what was happening around them would be harder to lie to. It's frustrating, but I think it's our responsibility as a member of a free society to at least try a little.
Every now and then, I'll watch the CBS/ABC/NBC evening "news" just to see what the current propaganda sounds like. It's sobering to think that millions of people take that stuff as gospel and let it influence their lives. We have to encourage each other to dig a little deeper and question that shite.
