Can I be an optimist and suggest these are just growing pains? With the internet and social media, there is so much more information as well as communication than ever before...by a wide margin. Yes I believe it’s true that there are way more people that are “radical” on both sides of the political aisle and on every issue. But is this just something that was inevitable with there being so much more access to information and an increase in ability to communicate with like minded (as well as not like minded) people? And that we will come out of it stronger and better off overall from having access to information and people interested in what’s going on in the world?

If anything, all of this has made me give even less of a frick about what acquaintances and FB friends think. I’ve learned to worry about my family first, then real friends.

Nothing wrong with worrying about family and friends equally.

That’s what happens when two back to back presidents are polarizing figures. Media and their sensational bs reflects this current nasty trend.

I hope you are right about growing pains. It seems as though as misinformation grows so does the divide.

Depends on the family and friends. Should have phrased it immediate family. I could give a shite what my slapdick cousin thinks.

It's because the internet is a giant confirmation bias echo chamber.

Take the poli board on this site or basically the entirety of reddit as examples.

You should really watch the movie "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix. It touches on how social media puts us all in bubbles of like-minded people, which has led to an increase of polarization of the population.

I don't think there are more radical people, they are still a minority by a longshot if taking a headcount. They are extremely loud and brazen on either side of the political spectrum. Most of us, probably 75% of us, get along just fine.

I might even go higher than 75%.

The interesting thing to me is the more fringe a voice gets the more traction it seems to get. It seems people in the middle while they might not agree with them on quite a bit they are drawn to the OTT passion as if they feel they are fighting the good fight against evil so they are OK in my book at least until they go too far.

Watched this the other night and it really puts it into light how much the algorithms have placed people into tighter bubbles.

This trend has been on a steep increase for the past 20 years.

This isn’t growing pains.

It’s shite approaching critical mass.
