As a parent, I would not drop the financial responsibility as long as she was still in high school. They are not necessarily obligated to pay for private school, but they are obligated to make sure she graduates. Once she graduates they can cut her off.

Ya, I think every thing else was fair game that they mentioned in the story, and I don't think the court would take that seriously. I wouldn't have cut off high school tuition either, and think the court may actually consider that issue. That one has some merit (without knowing the laws on this at all, just using some reasoning).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think parents can legally be a part of contributing to your truancy. Hence, what makes this interesting is that it involves a private school, when she could have attended a public to avoid the whole not attending school at all issue.

No way. I doubt they're the best parents but trying to hold their kids to strict rules is much better than having absent parents. I blame the family friend that supporting such trash. This lawsuit isn't going to mend this family.

If she is over 18, is she really truant?

No, it appears the parents just stopped contributing to her education, which would have effectively forced her to attend public school. While I don't think its a big deal, I could see a court finding they shirked their parental responsibilities to her by dropping support for her education.

She's also 18, and I wonder if that plays a part in this as well now.

Trey, I mentioned the 18 thing here too. And she was never "truant" because she kept attending. Its mainly the parent of her friend wants to be reimbursed for "parenting" her ie, keeping her in the lifestyle she was accustomed attending the private high school.

I think any other claims are probably a nonstarter, like the car, cash support, and future college tuition because as an adult, you are responsible for your education after that point. I'm also guessing what the laws on parental responsibility may generally be. Its not my area of practice

It's not law. IMO it is the very minimum a parent should do when raising a child is to make sure they graduate from high school.

She'd have a great law school reason to be admitted on her application

Unlike all your other candidates, I have actually sued someone.

I bet "keeping her in the lifestyle she was accustomed to" will come up several times in her life... /

ya, I wouldn't be shocked if that term is used here, and in her future divorce proceedings.

I don't know where this occurred, but her parents are lucky if they don't live in Mississippi. The age of majority here for support is 21.
