This was also one of three reservoirs in that area, so they did have some redundancy for providing drinking water.

Probably stupid, but it wouldn't have made a big difference anyway. Now way to put out fires stoked by 90 mph winds and neglected undergrowth.

This level of ineptitude is fascinating

There is plenty of blame to go around. I witnessed a homeowner hosing down his roof with household water pressure while the firemen stood and watched because there was no water available in the nearby hydrants. Obviously they have split systems.
What really frustrated me was watching the firemen blasting solid hose streams at the tips of the flames above the burning houses. That water fell far beyond the actual fire on the opposite side of the property. They didn't seem to know that fires need to be attacked at the base of the flames in order to put them out, Instead they were apparently trying to extinguish flying sparks and cool the tips of the flames with solid hose streams that soared uselessly through the air far beyond the structure.

These fires are expected seasonal events. To empty water reservoirs during this time for maintenance seems more intentional than incompetent IMO.

Fire season is 6 months away

Back in ancient times when an army conquered a lan they didn’t plan on occupying that would burn the cities and salt the ground. Just like L.A. burning to the ground and salt water being used to put out the fires. Sounds almost like punishment.

Saw a video of a guy that stayed in Palisades and kept his house from burning with his garden hose. Any small embers he would spray before they took hold. He said he watched all his neighbors houses start burning from small embers that grew because nobody was there to snuff it out. He also said he saw no fire trucks while the neighborhood burned.

Its possible the evacuations and nobody tending the houses made it worse.

This isn't fire season. Though, you can make a compelling argument that some years, depending on weather, their fire season is year round.

ETA: And compared to recent years (2023 excluded, being that was the drought busting year) they're in much better shape at this time in terms of drought than they have been in quite some time. It wasn't an unreasonable decision, or even an objectively bad one, to shut that reservoir down for the needed repairs at this time.
