Ufortunately she will probably have to pay. I just learned last week listening while sitting at the DMV. When transferring a vehicle from another state, you have to pay taxes to LA on the value of the vehicle. Ol boy next to me had just bought a used vehicle in Mississippi and paid the taxes on it there. Then got transferred here and was going to have to pay the taxes again.

I was willing to defend you at first and then you said some dumb shite like this.

And the blue book value for taxes you already paid on it in another state but this dumbass state wants to tax it again.

Louisiana will give you a credit for the taxes already paid if you have the bill of sale for the vehicle.

I just did this at the beginning of the year and it decreased the total registration fee significantly.

You're correct that I don't understand the unseen details in the paperwork of some random young hot chick making an impulse car purchase.

But my general statement is true about carryover sales tax (not idea about LA law however) and I'm wondering where a $3200 additional charge would come from. That's a pretty big number to slap on a car absent a lien or tax issue.

I think the OPs little girl friend needs to happen to bump into the person that sold her the car and get a bill of sale. Press a 0.50 cent piece onto it, scribble some initials across it to notorize it. This got a travel trailer transfered back in the day.

Seems like sales tax to register in LA. They don't have her bill of sale from when she bought it in Florida so when they retitled it they charged tax on the FMV with no credit given for tax already paid.

Tax rates vary by county and state. There are different laws going from state to state. Thats not just what I'm talking about though. I'm talking about the entire car deal.

These guys fling these cars out as fast as they can. Deals are made on promises that are not even legal sometimes. You would just have to hear the stories I hear daily.

salesman tells her no problem this is what it will cost to tag the car and we can roll it into your note and send you the tag.

Ok. They gave her a cost to tag the car which is based off of her mailing address. Did she have a Louisiana mailing address or did she use the Florida address? Just curious. They obviously gave her a cost and rolled it into her car note. Do not sign any addendums to change anything.

Today the dealership calls and tells her that her tag is in and she can come pick it up but it will cost her $3200 because that was the dealership’s cost to transfer her trade in to LA
bullshite. Give me my car back and I'm bringing the new car to you immediately. Call your attorney and dont sign a fricking thing. Magically, the dealership will eat the supposedly $3200 frick up on their side.

I never finance through a dealership. I always get the paperwork in advance before taking possession of the vehicle. If a loan is needed, I handle it through the bank. As far as the dealership is concerned, I am paying cash.

About 10 years ago, I moved to LA and had to pay LA sales tax on a car I bought in Texas and wanted to transfer to LA. It sounds like this gal is gonna have to pay her pound of flesh too.

Just talked to the dealership and the finance guy admitted they fricked up by not remembering it was a Florida registered vehicle

The $3200 is the difference between what was originally charged for sales tax in Florida and the sales tax charged by LA.

He admitted their was nothing they could do other than to ask her to pay. Then came the sob story of how he may lose his job or they are going to take it out of his pay.
Told him he may need to brush up his resume

I think she could push the issue by contacting the lender. I believe lenders require tax and tags included in deal to fund

Sales tax rate in Florida without any locals is 6%. Baton Rouge is 9.95% (10% for simplicity). The tax is determined on the fair market value of vehicle when it is registered, which should be less or at least no more than what she paid in Florida. If the car was worth $40k when she bought it in Florida tax paid would be $2,400. If it's worth the same amount now, which is unlikely, total Louisiana tax would be $4,000, but she'd get the credit for the $2.4k already paid leaving a delta of $1,600.

The math on the $3,200 doesn't add up. I would guess with relative certainty they aren't crediting tax paid, valuing the vehicle at $32k.

Shes likely going to owe a little bit, but it should be like a couple hundred bucks
