I made it through several layoffs when they started many months ago, but they finally caught up to me in June. Fortunately I had something else to fall back on in the interim, and am starting a new oil/gas gig in a couple of weeks. It happens cyclically like that in the oil field. Hang in there guys.

Some people were asking how much unskilled oil and gas labor makes. Most of the money made is in overtime. We pay our operators $18 an hour and pushers get $21-23. When times were good, our crews worked 6 on 3 off 12-16 hours a day. First four hours of ot at 1.5 and 2x after that. Guys we're bring in 120-132 hours a week. Easily 90-130k a year.

Currently, we can only give our guys 40hr a week with absolutely no ot. Guys are scrapping by right now with such a drastic decrease in pay.

sounds like they were living a lifestyle that wouldn't be the best for a cyclical job structure like O&G.

Hopefully those guys saved up that money to help them and their families through this rough patch and developed some skills that they can use to market elsewhere, while the market for O&G is down.

So you stated a fact, about the future? Interesting

And apparently you just like acting like a jackass while being a dumbass.

I'm not in oil and gas. I'm educated. I've been around it all my live. I can read and actually comprehend. And I can state for a fact you are one stupid mother fricked.

No thanks. I didn't want to do that, so I went to college, got a degree and learned a skill.

I'm not belittling the labor. I work around working people every damn day that sweat a hell of a lot more than I ever will. I've learned a lot from foremen in my career that are real craftsmen, bust arse, and do very well for themselves.

But if you aren't happy lugging pipe all day or with the money you're making lugging pipe all day, then go learn a trade, or go to school, or do something else.

I find it interesting how worked up you are about this, and you're not in oil and gas.

A lot of the young guys who had never been through a downturn were surprised the most. They were out partying and buying boats and ridiculously expensive trucks and things along those lines during the boom, instead of saving any of it.

Unfortunately, not enough. I shake my head at stories about borrowing from 401k to buy a truck or go on vacation. We tried getting these guys to talk to a financial advisor, but you can't help everyone. I'm in engineering sales trying to find work for these guys. We've been fortunate so far, but this month is going to be 80% of our target. Layoffs were just announced with our largest customer.

It's the ebb and flow of that particular industry. When times are good they pay probably a 50% premium to these employees for the jobs they actually do. They should be saving the premium for hard times instead of purchasing jacked up trucks and $600 ice chests.

Not to sound like an a-hole..but this ^^^

I know so many guys that work O&G who live way above their means. It's tough to feel sorry for them when the INEVITABLE happens and everything slows down.

Yeah, our manual labor gets paid like 13 bucks an hour, but can make 70k a year with overtime. During the moratorium, some of those guys were living on less than 30k a year. Our offshore hands do make A LOT. Some easily north of 250k. But they are by no means unskilled. Their knowledge is vast and valuable. Plus they may be offshore for 40 days at a time. These cuts are hitting management, engineers, and other office personnel. It is bad. I was a little shocked at some of the changes.

I hate oilfield trash making oilfield cash types. But I won't say they didn't earn their money. They just needed to realize if they were disposable or not. I honestly never thought of myself that way as I've always had a good reputation, but it's getting to that point. Very weird feeling .

5 O'Clock traffic these days are considerably lighter than it was in February. You can tell restaurants around laffy are taking a hit.Even the guys who have kept their job so far have taken pay cuts, including myself.

Ramen noodles and tap water

This is the what's for dinner thread for oilfield hands right?

Eta: gave myself an upvote for finally learning how to budget and live within my means

You wouldn't feel this way if it was you... Its more than just layoffs and cheap gas... The whole south LA economy will suffer for this........ While I am in good shape in my industry, I feel for those in the oilfield right now... I was part of the boom of the early 80's and the falloff from that. It wasn't fun.........

O&G guys, I don't know what to tell you. I am sorry because it sucks not knowing when/where your next paycheck is coming. But I have to say, it isn't my patriotic duty to overpay for gas so some can live an overinflated lifestyle. That's not a jab, that's an honest take. Some of you recognize this and are what I would consider good people with a good handle on the context of their employment. The ones that lash out and act like we should all be ashamed for having our consumer $ go further are assholes.

O&G is not the place to be if cyclical unemployment is unacceptable.

Yes I understand it has impacts on other industries but over a long enough time period in economics is the nature of creative destruction. If the Saudis can bury us like this, then we aren't currently suited to be stable in this industry. I know it's harsh but its just reality.
