I worked for ConocoPhillilps in Houston. They already had a round of layoffs in April, and announced big layoffs coming in 2 weeks. I'm in IT. Houston is saturated with IT people since BP, Chevron, Shell, Haliburton, Baker Hughes and others have already had huge layoffs of all diciplines. I saw the writing on the wall and moved back to DFW area in June. Good luck to all impacted

Plenty of jobs available in the truck driving biz. Trade in your truck nuts for 18 wheels, baws!

An old friend of mine works in the Chevron home office in San Fran. A few months ago, he was talking about a 2-3 year downturn. Now, he's talking about a possible 20 year period rivaling that of the 80's and 90's.

People on this board go out of their way to seem edgy so they'll post a bunch of comments about how cheap their gas is and how they don't care about people losing their jobs. A lot of people who work very hard have lost or will lose their jobs and if that's funny to you, then you're probably 15 years old.

I live in El Segundo CA where Chevron has a big refinery right on the coast. No layoffs happening there. And a sweet location.

I think what he surmises to be a definite possibility and the implications are huge for a number of reasons...economic, political, personal retirement and the likes, even militarily in terms of where or if we even choose to engage

Yeah Tin Roof Bistro is good. They make a drink called It's a Man's World. Quite possibly the best whiskey cocktail I've ever had.
The owners opened up a new restaurant in downtown El Segundo that's like 4 blocks from where I live but haven't tried it yet. Gotta check it out.

I guess it's possible but there are differences in the 80's and now, namely the decline rates and the source of the excess production. Saudi made cuts in the 80's and finally had cut so much (down to a couple million barrels a day) they had to regain some revenue. They unleashed a mountain of oil on the market that had to be worked off alongside new finds in the North Sea and Prudhoe Bay. Now we have over leveraged investments in shale oil and oil sands that have driven almost all the production gains and the supply to be worked off is much smaller. This will no doubt be a bad downturn but barring any kind of crazy demand destruction the market should rebalance at some point.

I think the number was 1,500 layoffs across the board, and of course, the closing of the Lafayette office with a much smaller operation being relocated to Covington/Mandeville.

Now is the time for us to crack down on illegals. All of the oilfield workers need those jobs, and it helps ease the burden of unemployment.

No one should fix their mouth or type a word to talk bad about a man in hardship with his family. Especially that's not of his own doing. Say a prayer and be thankful you aren't one of them.

It is getting scary here in Houston. Worst I have ever seen it in 25 years.

The Haliburton in Houma on Coteau had 4-5 cars there this morning. It's a huge site and it's a ghost town now.
