I sold advertising in industry and we got to the point before I even left where we stopped going ti Lafayette altogether to focus on industrial service companies and chemical/refining.

well that is not true at all

go to any of the big oil field areas and the overwhelming majority of the O&G will be from different areas

they all follow the work

You do know that other industries use pipe fitters, etc, right?

Do you suggest the government artificially inflate the price of gasoline in order to subsidize the lifestyle of oilfield workers?

Except oilfield general labor isn't making $12/hr, they're making $19-20.

Again, you clearly have no clue about these people.

FIFY. And theres nothing wrong with that.

I'm in the Construction Industry. I promise you there is a shortage of quality labor because all of the skilled guys have chased the money to Industrial. Its hard for subs to find guys that will just show up with arse and face for 40hrs.

If you are fired in the O&G business, you have a skill. Take that skill, and work for a union, or a construction company. Work is not an issue. I see guys all the time quit because they can't stand to be away from their shitty backwoods town the grew up in. I could get a good equipment operator a job tomorrow if they wanted to work in GA.

This is the most frustrating thing.

If I was laid off, I would look around in my current city, but I'd also look across the country. Many people aren't willing to do that, but they are willing to sit on their arse at home.

With all the money everyone is saving on gas prices, they'll go out to eat more and shop at these family businesses. Right?
Depends on what their MPC/MPS is

I'm sure plenty of them are moving elsewhere to find work

but its not the most pleasant thing to pack up a family to move for work

ok, just so you understand, a lot of these lay offs are engineers, people that work in accounting, sales, operations, human resources, management, logistics, personal, etc

I even know a few in-house attorneys that have been laid off.

Finding these jobs are not as easy as you're making it sound.

I have noticed a decline in "oilfield trash spending oilfield cash" bump stickers. Hard to feel bad for someone with that shite stamped on their car.

Lake Charles attracts Houstonians to their casinos, so I imagine they will see a decline in revenue.

I will be willing to bet that all of these people, outside of the human resources people, will be able to find similar jobs making similar money soon.
