Oil and GasPosted by Jerryb on 1/16/21 at 7:17 am

First time posting and long time lurker. Been very distraught over covid and the election. Will Biden ruin the oil and gas economy in Louisiana? Work in Geismer area without giving away too many details. Maybe switch to millwork somewhere else if things go south?

What do you mean? Both Elon Musk and the president of Toyota have commented on the farcical thinking of those who believe we can kill the fossil energy business. They spoke within the context of moving to electric only cars. To charge those cars and to heat or cool your house there is not enough renewable energy production in this country to substitute for fossil fuels. Envision they kill it. It then would take wall to wall windmills across the country and then throw in a few new nuclear power plants to do it (and probably not). Sometimes the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't peek out beneath the clouds. And then we have plastics and feedstock to pharmaceuticals etc. People who think they can kill the industry have degrees in women's studies and art history.

That was in the works for years. Don’t tell false information
OP,
Oil and gas will never completely go away. I work in renewables and I can tell you that there’ll always be a huge need. However, O&G has always fluctuated and it doesn’t matter the letter beside the (fraudulent) President’s name.
The problem with Louisiana is failure to diversify beyond O&G, so when it’s down; it seems like the apocalypse in Louisiana.

The oil and gas industry has seen some of it's worst years under Trump. Massive layoffs at Exxon and Shell and other major oil and gas companies, cancelling of 401k contribution match, cancelling of major projects, etc. Those all came under Trump. These last several years have been some of the worst years the industry has seen (downvotes incoming, but it's true). There are thousands of derivatives of crude oil that we depend on every day, so it's not like the industry can be shut down in a matter of a few years. Yes, Biden is for green energy. I'm far from a Biden fan but anyone who cares about the world their grandchildren will grow up in should be willing to support the move to cleaner and more sustainable energy.

Even if no fossil fuels were needed for energy or vehicle fuel you still have the issue of the entire petrochemical industry and the 6000+ products derived from it.
From PVC pipe to pharmaceuticals

Too many trees for windmills or solar panels. But perhaps a system of concrete piers and windmills could be constructed in the marshes in south Louisiana. They could be designed to also create fishing habit. That'd work.

If anything , he’ll scale back drilling and fracking on public land. This should cause the oil price to go up

A simple mind would blame this on Trump. In fact a very simple mind. We went from a booming economy under Trump to a suck fest after Covid. The virus came from China through Europe and to America via sneezing, wheezing and feverish tourists and the like. It killed demand for petroleum products. Sort of a supply and demand thing.

Covid has only had an impact over the last year. The decline in the oil and gas industry started well before Covid. Anyone who works in the industry knows that things were better during the years prior to Trump taking office.
Harris is at Texas now.
