Observation from my niece’s HS graduation

Lots of parents crying. I don’t think out of all graduations I have ever attended seeing parents crying in public for a high school graduation.
I’m not knocking the parents for showing emotion or anything like that, I just thought it was odd to see this.

Meh, some parents put a lot of time and money into raising their kids and HS graduation is the culmination of their childhood rearing coming to an end. (Basically)
Parents will cry at every stage of life for their kids.
Going to kindergarten, starting to drive, HS graduation, college graduation, etc.

You win. The parents at the HS graduation I attended acted like wild animals.

Again.. I’m not knocking them.. I’ve just never seen that before in previous graduations I have attended

Nothing unusual about parents crying at a K-12 graduation.

Do you have children? Have you ever been to one of their graduations?
Hell, I got teary eyed at my daughter’s Kindergarten graduation. Not because “graduating” kindergarten is some sort of significant accomplishment. But because it was bittersweet watching my little girl, whom I’ve loved unconditionally from the second she was born, grow up.
For many parents I bet the emotion is not the result of pride for some monumental accomplishment, but more of a realization of the passage of time

It happens, but where the graduation takes place also matters. Not all high school graduations mean the same to everyone.

I don’t have kids.
It just shows me that these past few years have been very difficult for high schoolers and parents. That’s what I got out of it

Nah, unless you go somewhere like a private uppity school where most kids’ parents are college graduates then your standard public school has tons of overly emotional moms and aunts and shite. I remember joking about that at mine 20 years ago about how some parents act like their kid just won the Super Bowl.

Only if she’s 18, of course.

This may explain my lack of tears. Really, I don’t understand this at all.

Passage of time I can see maybe crying, but unfortunately for many, HS graduation is the biggest accomplishment of their life, when we should recognize it as the bare minimum and just the first stepping stone towards a career path.

Of course not. But if it makes a 6 year old happy and proud of her “accomplishment”, then what is the harm? I guess unless you’re a parent that makes it out to be more than what is.
She “graduated”. She was proud of the songs she sang and learning to read. We had pizza for lunch after. It was a great day even though it wasn’t a significant accomplishment.
But I agree, once they get older , 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade, etc a “graduation” would be a bit ridiculous

I can understand how having your kids get older, grow up, leave the house could be an emotional moment for a parent.

Got misty for HS.
May shed a few for college. My kids have busted their asses and have great grades.
