It goes on to say that many of the "community organizers" in predominantly black North Minneapolis actually support increased police presence in their communities.
So now, many Black citizens of Minneapolis are angry. Not because the police aren't being defunded. But because the white city council pledged to do so without ever actually consulting their constituents.

MINNEAPOLIS — Over three months ago, a majority of the Minneapolis City Council pledged to defund the city’s police department, making a powerful statement that reverberated across the country. It shook up Capitol Hill and the presidential race, shocked residents, delighted activists and changed the trajectory of efforts to overhaul the police during a crucial window of tumult and political opportunity.
Now some council members would like a do-over.
quote:
Councilor Andrew Johnson, one of the nine members who supported the pledge in June, said in an interview that he meant the words “in spirit,” not by the letter. Another councilor, Phillipe Cunningham, said that the language in the pledge was “up for interpretation” and that even among council members soon after the promise was made, “it was very clear that most of us had interpreted that language differently.” Lisa Bender, the council president, paused for 16 seconds when asked if the council’s statement had led to uncertainty at a pivotal moment for the city.
“I think our pledge created confusion in the community and in our wards,” she said.

National polls show decreasing support for Black Lives Matter since a sea change of good will in June. In Minneapolis, the most far-reaching policy efforts meant to address police violence have all but collapsed.

What a disingenuous tool.

When the councilors made this pledge it was marketed as a “defund police” pledge. If that’s not what they actually meant it to be, then they should have said so at that time. Otherwise, they are just backtracking and trying to avoid admitting their stupidity.

Will never admit they were wrong

Liberalism is such a mental disease.

This country is about to over-correct itself.

You mean a bunch of white liberals listened to outside agitators instead of their own black neighbors. Impossible!

Not what I expected from the NY Times. It's really a balance and well written article.
It even mentions the many residents who are concerned by the spike in gun violence over the summer when police backed out of minority neighborhoods

To quote Shapiro.
Facts don’t care about your feelings.
You need police.
I said it so the mob wouldn’t burn my house down

Seattle said hold my beer, city council overrides mayor's veto on 3 bills.
quote:
Among the cuts to the police budget, the council approved:
Defunding the department by an additional $3 million;
Cutting roughly 100 officers from the department;
Disbanding the Navigation Team, which provides an outreach resource to the city's homeless population.

That’s one thing I would have thought they would increase funding for
