No catch, you just shoot them...

and why do you need a trappers license and not just a hunting license...?

I remember when they used to have ol' baws riding down W. Esplanade in Metry, shooting nutria in the canals out the back of a pickup truck. Do they still do that?
Back when Steven Seagal had that Lawman reality show on A&E, they had an episode where JPSO SWAT team was doing that with suppressed .22's at night

I used to get $5 a nutria when I trapped them as a kid. $7 for a coon or mink. $3 for a muskrat. $30 for an otter (never caught one).
The decline of the fur industry hit me hard as a youth.

This is probably the worst thing (NUTRIA RODEO - mass killing of another species) I have read about what humans are doing in the last 24 hours. And then, people wonder what *sets somebody off* and why people (unexpectedly) go on shooting sprees and kill people in gun outlets/shooting ranges and/or kill people at high school basketball games --- blah blah blah. There is no RESPECT for LIFE (at any level). This is the WORST, and yes, I am glad it was reported/covered, because these humans must be watched. This is the most dangerous SPECIES alive today.

There is a great episode of Insomniac with Dave Attel where he did that with the jpso. Everything was better when Harry Lee was running things.

I was just looking for it, can’t find it. It was great.

I guess because it’s technically a furbearer.

And trapping is a more sure fire way to make sure you get the tail, rather than sniping them while they swim or something.

Nut jobs all over facebook, a buddy shared it and was getting dragged in the comments, never mind they are donating the meat to the zoo...

I remember that one. I was managing the Blockbuster video on W. Esplanade at the time. During slow nights, it was one of the few pleasures working there, being able to watch them shoot nutria in the canal.

As I just said in the snake thread, the comments on these sorts of articles or youtube videos are hysterical. People crying because people are catching a 15 foot python "too roughly" in a Florida back yard. The PETA crowd is a strange bunch.

how so?

By requiring private law abiding citizens to check in with local sheriff before shooting hogs/beavers/nutria, etc. on their own or leased property at night (this was changed to the landowners benefit very recently iirc); by requiring licenses to hunt invasives day or night; by limiting invasive seasons and method of take on LDWF owned lands to only open hunting season, on and on damned control freaks.

But, LDWF is making headway because not long ago one could not shoot beavers or other nuisance animals at night no matter if they were eating/flooding your timber and crops, etc., didn’t matter to LDWF.

They did something recently permitting you to shoot them at night on private property I believe, but people have always been doing that on private property. You still may have to let the "sheriff" know though but I could be wrong, its not really prioritized in these parts.

Beavers are a native species.

quote:

On private property, the landowner, or his lessee or agent with written
permission and the landowner’s contact information in his possession,
may take outlaw quadrupeds, nutria or beaver during nighttime hours
year round.

That's from the LA regulations.

quote:

LDWF owned lands to only open hunting season

I think this is a wise choice in most cases.

Look bro, you can split hairs how ever you see fit. I have an issue when the gov restricts a landowners’ right to protect his property and only recently has LDWF loosened their grip on private landowners to protect their own. We’ve fought beavers and deer for 40+ fkn yrs. with only agitation from LDWF.

Their rules damn sure protect invasives on LDWF-owned lands; but I understand the conundrum.
