Know a few guys that did this. One just left his wife a few months before his last kid turned 18. Figured by the time it goes through, he will be in the clear.

I’m a high earner and she’s a stay at home mom so divorce would ruin me financially to say the least.

I mean, the longer you stay married to her the larger share of your retirement/savings she'll get to claim, if you're in a community property state.

In LA permanent spousal support is hard to get so you would have interim SS through the 1-year waiting period and 6 months after the divorce. Then it's just child support.

If you are married over 10 years she’ll get half of your current and future retirement. You can thank a female Senator for that Federal law. But equality!!!!! “Don’t need no man…just his life savings”!

You definitely wait until the babysitter to turn 18 before leaving the wife for her.

Why would they get money that you put into retirement after you got divorced? Or are you talking about a pension or something?

I think that may be military. I've never heard of that rule.

If get divorced earlier less alimony.

Alimony generally based upon how long married.

If under 5 years, maybe 12-18 months.
If you wait 16 years we could be talking alimony in perpetuity.

Turn 18 aside for a moment, if divorce with kids, why would you not want to support your children?

Many yrs ago back in the 80's I lived in rural Arkansas where the large rice and cotton farmers were land millionaires. There was very little divorce there in this group because families were not splitting the land up. I saw a couple different families that just decided to do their separate thing while still remaining married. A guy I worked with told me a story about going to meet a young girl's parents and he met the mom and she said "if you wait a little bit your daddy and his girlfriend will be here..."

Anybody done this before and if so was that the right call or would you have gotten divorced sooner?

It's bs. Just do it whenever it doesn't work anymore.

My wife developed epilepsy during the course of our marriage. I couldn’t let her go now with good conscience…she’s damaged goods!?!

Serious dilemma. If you wait until after the children are adults, they are better able to cope with the aftermath of the breakup. However, the children will be subjected to the drama and tension associated with the breakup daily while waiting it out.

Yup. This word is being WAY overused these days.
