New Shell CEO Faces Big Dilemma: Should the Company Pump More Oil?

Wael Sawan knows he is about to make some people very unhappy.
The new chief executive of Shell is in the midst of crafting his business plan for the London-based energy giant, including whether to increase oil production. Doing so would please many investors looking to build on last year’s oil-and-gas bonanza, which produced record annual earnings for Shell.
But it almost certainly would generate howls of protest from environmentalists and other critics, including investors who want Shell to tackle climate-related goals more aggressively. Those investors argue a continued focus on fossil fuels endangers Shell’s long-term prospects in a changing world.
Mr. Sawan says he is committed to lowering the company’s emissions and helping develop a new generation of clean-energy sources. But that is not where the bulk of profits are right now.
“I fundamentally believe in the role of oil and gas for a long, long time to come,” he said in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal.
What’s more, he said, he doesn’t believe renewable- and low-carbon energy projects should be subsidized by Shell’s fossil-fuel profits, but should deliver returns that merit continued investment on their own. “We’re definitely taking a hard look at the portfolio,” Mr. Sawan said.

Finding the balance between fossil fuels and lower-carbon alternatives is a big challenge facing the CEOs of the biggest energy companies.
The task is particularly acute for Mr. Sawan and Shell, Europe’s biggest energy company, which moved to the U.K. after a Dutch court ruled in 2021 that it was partially responsible for climate change and must reduce its carbon emissions. Shell is appealing the ruling, arguing that it is being unreasonably singled out.
quote:
Less than a year ago, Shell’s annual shareholder meeting in London was delayed by almost three hours by climate activists attending as shareholders, who glued themselves to chairs and chanted against the company’s continued spending on fossil fuels.
quote:
Shell said two years ago it plans to end all new frontier exploration by the end of 2025, giving the company a finite window to search for virgin reservoirs of oil and gas where it isn’t already operating.
Dwindling options for limiting global warming call for a massive and rapid shift away from fossil fuels, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in a report last week.
At the same time, oil demand is continuing to rise, and investors in global oil giants have rewarded companies—including U.S. giants Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp.—for sticking with traditional fossil-fuel production.

I know you’re trolling, but damn.

Oh, so the people who constantly complain about everything will complain more?
Probably should just shut everything down and go live in the woods then

Royal Dutch Shell came from Royal Dutch trading in SE Asia with oil, and Shell Transportation a tanker owner. Shell USA was a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell. Most people refer to it as just Shell.
The company has two HQ, London and The Hague.
Technically, Shell Chemical is a different company than the oil company, with a different board of directors

The real influence is on individual board members. Let's take the Carillon unit at Geismar built in 1998/99 and dismantled in 2001. After the polybutylene pipe lawsuits in California, Shell Chemical decided to begin to get out of the plastics business. Carillon was a polyketone polymer discovered in the 1950's but an accidental discovery by Shell Development (Houston R&D) made it commercially viable. It could rub against itself and not wear out so ideal for gears in printers. It was impervious to hydrocarbons so Ford developed a gas tank with internal fuel pump all made from the same plastic. There was even a liner that could be popped into place inside of deteriorating oil well casing. It was tested on commercial carpet and could be used and wouldn't fade or wear out for 20 years.
When Shell made the decision to begin getting out of plastics, one board member who had been the champion of this new product took his money and went elsewhere. Shell made just enough material to fulfill all existing orders (about 24 hrs worth) then shut the unit down forever.
I was involved in this after it shutdown.

Shell was formed in 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company of the Netherlands and The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company of the United Kingdom.
Shell plc is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England
When did you think She’ll was an American Oil Company?

You've been here 10 years and can't decipher a gaucho post?

They prob should've asked that question before they earmarked capex to a new subsea tieback to Appomattox.
Posted on 3/28/23 at 8:47 am to dkreller
They’ve done a lot more in the gulf with new oil than just that tie back. Lots more

Sooner or later the bean counters get to make the decision.
I’m all for alternative energy but the technology has to make sense and provide value.

Those investors don't care about return. They are activists with money and only care about taking down the oil companies regardless of the economical damage it would cause.
