Most of the population loss was between 2020 and 2023 (after Ida and Covid shutting everything down). The city's population went from 385k to 365k during those three years. Between 2023 and 2024, it lost 2500 people. Not ideal but the rate of people leaving went down. These numbers are in the Census data linked in OP's article.

They all moved to Metairie, not a big deal.
Except for the traffic in Metairie, thats a big deal.

What do you mean? ETA: Judging by the downvotes, I get it now. People are afraid to say that it's because of the black people, so they use the euphemism, "demographics".

Louisiana as a whole doesn't exactly have a bright future.

If forced to choose between gambling and regulated prostitution or unrestricted violence, theft and street crime that interferes with commerce and tourism I’ll take option a everytime.
And as far as gambling goes what is the casino if not gambling?

2024 was probably the best year in NO in its history.
And LaToya is done and some decent mayoral candidates coming up,

Demographics are better now than in 2000. The economy sucks and doesn’t justify the COL and government service blows. But, the port is strong and the tourism numbers are pretty damn strong.

Sorry, my ears just don't pick up dog whistles like they used to. Sue me.

It’s not a euphemism. Race is a major component of demographics. As is age, ethnicity, education levels, etc.
And the demographics of New Orleans are bad, as is shown in every known statistic, from crime rates to average income to STDs.

In the case of New Orleans it all depends on who is leaving.
Posted on 3/15/25 at 10:52 am to RunninReb
Then why was traffic so bad when I was there last week? Apparently people are still there.

It had such a positive resurgence about 10-15 years ago. Sad. That growth/resurgence was a flash in a pan.

Lots of 9 millimeter boys call Houston home now. Bigger market more money.

New Orleans will never die, it’s like a plant that is super hardy.
It’s just on a lonnnnnnng cycle of low survival.
If only it could be nourished it would grow and flourish but I doubt that will ever happen

You mean back when it was rather widely considered the most thriving prosperous city in the US South, by a pretty long shot?

The city is now in a position where they’d need to entice businesses to come back with favorable terms, and they can’t and won’t ever do it.
As some have pointed out, in many cases the jobs and people moved 3 miles away. Same case in Jackson, which is also on the list.

That dynamic in the New Orleans metro hasn’t really existed much for over 30 years. Jefferson ain’t exactly booming much at all these days by comparison.

It’s documented that the whole state’s desirable population is declining.
